They think they can fool enough people who don’t know how things work into believing that they want change so that they can get the benefit of sounding good while avoiding taking positions that would actually make a difference. This is part of the Democratic leadership’s counterinsurgency role in redirecting public outrage and social movement energy away from things that could transform our society into a more equal and less repressive one—goals those with power in the party don’t share and actively oppose.
