Thanks to @DylanPoulus and @NovakSportSci.
This is only a preliminary investigation and there is more to come from our team.
What drives expertise in esports?
Our new study explored this very idea.
We analysed the practice behaviours of top-ranked @LeagueOfLegends players across eight servers.
We found:
1️⃣Practice volume and expertise are linked 2️⃣Better stress-coping likely means more consistent practice 3️⃣Player pool & competitiveness shape practice behaviours 4️⃣Distinct practice patterns impact engagement/disengagement.
The conference schedule for the Australasian Skill Acquisition Network Conference is now available. Do not miss out on this fantastic event.

🚨 PhD Scholarship Opportunity 🚨
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to explore the psychology of esports participation in the context of mental health and/or performance psychology. This project could examine the potential adverse effects of esports participation and how to identify or prevent them. Projects could also investigate the psychology of esports performance and how to improve player performance. Applicants should have experience studying psychology, mental health, or high performance and a deep understanding of esports.

🚨New Esports Research: Defining Elite Esports Athletes🚨
How should we define elite esports athletes?
We are excited to announce the publication of our latest open-access research in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology. We set out to provide clarity on how "elite" esports athletes were defined across various research studies and provide three key outcomes:
1⃣A Definition: “…we conceptualise elite e’athletes as individuals who compete at the highest level for their esport.”
2⃣An Initial Elite Clarification System: We introduce a 2-step classification system that considers both the highest level of competition and success within that level to better define elite status in esports (pictured below).
3⃣Guidelines for Future Research: We recommend new reporting guidelines to help researchers provide more detailed and consistent definitions of elite esports sample characteristics, facilitating more meaningful comparisons and insights (pictured below)
We hope this research provides a critical step towards standardising the field and improving the quality of research in esports.
A big thank you to my co-authors @benjamintsharpe, Patricia C. Jackman, @cswannpsych & @KyleJMBennett for their incredible contributions to this work!

@GameAwareAU We are also doing some work on what learning we can take from traditional sports talent pathways and the best way forward for esport talent systems.
Happy to see this work accepted. We hope that our guidelines will help to standardise the demographic and contextual information that authors report, providing more transparency around samples and allowing for meaningful cross-study conclusions. Great work team!
