The league used to be covered and presented like this. It’s a huge part of why older fans have an affinity for this era. The way the games would be contextualized and the way narratives were spun were done for the express purpose of uplifting the players and making them stars and household names.
This needs to be the bigger conversation in eras comparison over “could this guy play in X decade”. Beyond anything, this is a TV entity that’s supposed to entertain, and the question that should be asked and discussed is “are we doing the best job to make our PRODUCT great?”

They branded the top players better, they had the Bob Costas video packages, they SHOWED the player intros, the players and coaches understood their roles and would create interest going into nationally televised regular season matchups by talking spicy going into games, (Pat Riley, JVG, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Shaq were headline masters) and the commercials and marketing were more creative.
