Kyoshi hate violence & use it as the last resort
In her era, extreme measure is needed to prevent power hungry & poor leadership
She didnt told Aang to kill Ozai
"Only Justice Will Bring Peace" doesnt necesarily means death sentence but proportional consequences for one's actions
The hollowness left behind let her know the answer for certain this time. "It's over," she said.
Rangi cupped her hands over her face. She sniffed, sharp little noises ringing in her palms. Kyoshi pressed her forehead to Rangi's.
And together they cried for their friend
She reached out and clamped her hand on Kyoshi's leg to still the shaking. "We're not in our element," Rangi said. "You might have the keys to certain doors, but this is not our house. You have to be more careful."
Her waiter checked back in. "Is Mistress finished?" she asked with a bowed head.
"Rin, I went to your birthday party," Kyoshi said. "I chipped in for that comb you're wearing."
The girl shrugged.
The burn reached her skin. She didn't pull away. Maybe she deserved to be punched straight through, a red-hot hole in her chest.
"Answer me!" Rangi screamed. "Answer me, you — you-"
Kyoshi closed her eyes, squeezing out tears, and readied herself for the blow.
It never came.
“I don’t need it,” Kyoshi said. She smiled into Rangi’s hair, the soft strands caressing her lips.
“And I don’t need an army. I have you.” “Psh,” Rangi scoffed. “A lot of good I’ve been so far. If I were better at my job you would never feel scared. Only loved. Adored by all.”
"I'm all right. Go find Sifu Atuat. I need a moment alone with Kyoshi."
Rangi clipped her heels together and left to retrieve who-ever this Atuat person was. Hei-Ran gathered herself and stared down Kyoshi. How she managed to do that from her lower height was a mystery.
Kyoshi was watching a memory of her past life. She stared at a young Kuruk from every angle at once, recognizing what was going through his mind with each twitch of his handsome face.
She felt like she was going to drown above water, a fate she would have accepted gladly. A just punishment for an unwanted girl who'd squandered her second chance. Kelsang, a miraculous, loving father conjured from thin air. And she'd cursed him with death and ruin.
The others, noticing her shift, went silent. Kyoshi had been asked that very question long ago, after the final time she'd seen both Jianzhu and Yun under the same roof. One her greatest fear, the other her greatest regret. Both of them now gone.
"Rangi'll come around," Yun said. "She's a person of faith, you know? A true believer. It's hard for someone like her to deal with uncertainty. You have to be a little patient with her." He caught himself and twisted his lips.
"What is it?" Kyoshi said
Kyoshi needed both of them in order to feel whole. She wanted her paired set of friends put back into its original place, before the earthquake had knocked everything off the shelf. This state of not-knowing they were trapped in was a plane of spiritual punishment,
Xu responded as if it were the most normal request in the world.
"Challenges are meant to settle grievances,” he said, dabbing the pad of his forefinger with his tongue again.
“What insult have I given you?”
“Your existence,” Kyoshi spat
Perhaps Kirima had meant to soothe the beast inside Kyoshi, but instead she'd smeared its nose with fresh blood
"Oh, I'm sorry" Kyoshi said, a lifetime's worth of unused irony pouring forth
"I'll remember to be nicer to the boy my mother and father decided to raise instead of me"
Kyoshi was able to recite Kuruk's love poem for Hei-Ran even though it was never published to anyone except Kelsang. That became the first sign that she is Kuruk's reincarnation and the true Avatar. Kelsang, of course, the first one who realized it.
she didn't want her secretary witnessing her private moments.
'Day one of Kyoshi's visit to the Fire Nation'
she imagine him documenting for posterity.
'The Avatar inappropriately kiss the love of her life while standing in the threshold of the most fortified place in the world'
Kyoshi never wanted the torment to end. Rangi pressed into her like metal glowing on an anvil, scorching her where their skin met. Fingers ran through Kyoshi's hair, twisting and pull-ing to remind her how delightfully at the Firebender's mercy she was.
Kyoshi had always admired Rangi. But right now, it felt as if she were gazing at her friend through a pane of glass freshly cleaned. Some mighty and loving spirit had reached down from the heavens and outlined the Firebender in new strokes of color and vibrance.
"Stand down, all of you!" she shouted. Kuruk's memories had been a stage play, but here she was the actor now, not the audience. And a bad performance could lead to a national disaster.
"Where are my companions?" Kyoshi asked
"The lieutenant and the headmistress?" She had a feeling she'd need the guidance of Fire Nationals for what came next.
"Coordinating the palace lockdown" came the gruff reply.
'Being useful, unlike you' was the additional silent commentary.
