The EU’s sanctions regime is theatre built on industrial-scale hypocrisy.
It condemns Russian energy in press releases, demands sacrifice from everyone else - and then buys it in bulk.
🇪🇺The EU remains the largest buyer of Russian LNG, accounting for almost half 49% of Russia’s total LNG exports while purchasing 32% of Russian pipeline gas.
🇹🇷Then there is Turkey : the EU’s prized “strategic partner” and Ukraine’s supposed ally buys 26% of Russia’s oil-product exports and 30% of its pipeline gas. Yet Ukraine still decorates its foreign minister with the Order of Merit.
They are not starving Putin’s war machine. They are financing it, rewarding those who finance it, and demanding everyone else pay the price.
If our interest is to keep a united front against Russia, we can't undermine the strategic interests of southern member states. EU ignored Greece’s existential threats from Turkey for years, yet now clutches pearls calling Athens “shameless” for protecting its own interests. You can't exercise selective "European solidarity" and then act surprised when undermined members prioritize their own survival. We need to fix the hypocrisy or watch this story repeat itself many times more.
@robin_j_brooks The EU's push to sanction Greek-controlled maritime assets won’t hurt Russia—it just hands a massive market share to China & India.
Why should Greece dismantle its own shipping sector for toothless economic symbolism? National interests must come first.
@jaanus There is no solidarity in foreign policy, only interests. EU countries did not rescue Greece out of solidarity, but because they considered that it is in their interest to do so. Enough with the naivety.
@rshereme EU leaders and bureaucrats are cozying up to Turkey—a country that ignores sanctions on Russia, occupies part of an EU nation, and actively threatens another with war.
Why should Greece be expected to sit back and not defend its own interests?

@robin_j_brooks Why should Greece prioritize the Russian threat to Northern & Eastern Europe when our own allies consistently overlook the Turkish threat?
Instead of solidarity, we watch EU leaders cozying up to Ankara. Geopolitics cannot be a one-way street. 🇬🇷🇪🇺
Turks crying under this post: Just wondering why they complain for the end of the Ottoman Empire, which daddy Kemal regarded as degenerate and abolished its concepts altogether. It really shows a lot about today's Turkish society and the poisonous aggression instilled in them.
