Happy 70th birthday to the European flag ๐ช๐บ
Back in 1955, the Council of Europe reviewed more than 100 designs, and chose this one as the winner.
The 12 stars stand for completeness, not countries. The design was chosen so it wouldnโt change with borders or new members.
@camwg86@kareem_carr What a shame, science could really use a method of cheap, accessible and functional gene therapy, it could be very useful to cure stuff like XLA. What a shame that anti-vaxxers wonโt share their secrets
@JasonCr70173537@MarkPatient@RAurora@kareem_carr So one of those steps would require proliferation of mRNA (like a pathogen would do), which isnโt done in any vaccine, or a concentration that isnโt physically possible to administer in any scale. Besides, cell exhaustion would be larger issue than tissue damage in that case
@camwg86@kareem_carr Explain exactly on how covid vaccines (I assume you mean mRNA vaccines, but know that they are whole-organism/peptide based vaccines too) act as gene therapies?
@BedechReturns@kareem_carr โฆ because triggering an immune response is the point? You need a B/T cell response to generate their respective memory cells, after all.
@Bulletboy4201@kareem_carr Youโre correct, vaccines have been effective for more than 80 years, which is why we continue to administer them, and are constantely researching new ways to use them more effectively and against different diseases
@ErinArdell@DeaconRj@DrNeilStone What a shame, really looking forward to how antivaxx "science" looks. Anyways, for some proper reading, I recommend Janewayโs Immunobiology, and Case Studies in Immunology as a companion with some real examples.
@nealjwells@DebBrow16344984@DrNeilStone Vaccines are preventative, not for acute treatment. You might be thinking of passive immunization / antibody transfer. But why resort to (expensive!) regular treatment when vaccines can prove better protection, at lower cost, with less side effects?
