Who has more fun on Fridays in the summer than @kzoochem? The department rotates a series of activities each week to provide a break from their work. This week the lab students of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Josie Mitchell arranged for their peers to tie dye lab coats.

Meet the Chem & Biochem Class of 2023!
Crystal Mendoza is a Chemistry Major and a big contributor to our department. At K, she did research in Dr. Tresca’s group. She also did an REU at @USCChemistry and a RISE Germany internship. 1/
Crystal has been one of the leaders for Sukuma Dow for the past 2 years.
About our department, she says “My favorite thing is the community and friends I've made throughout my 4 years. There is always someone willing to lend a helping hand” 2/
On May 18, Kzoo chemistry, biochemistry, and biology students welcomed K-12 students and their families from the Kalamazoo community onto campus for Family Science Night. 1/
About 160 students attended the event that included 15 booths run by 40 K students. The masterminds behind this were our very own Dr. Mitchell and the planning committee: Max Rhames, Crystal Mendoza, Elizabeth Wang, and Onora Lancaster. 3/
After graduation, Abby is taking two gap years to work as a medical assistant before attending PA school. We know she’s going to do an awesome job. We’re proud of you, Abby!

Abby Barnum is a Biochemistry/German double major. While at K, Abby did research in Dr. Tresca’s lab @BlakeTresca (yay, peptoids!). She studied abroad in Erlangen, where she did organic synthesis on photoswitches.

She has also volunteered with YAP, Sisters in Science, and the Red Cross Club.
About our department, she says “My favorite thing is definitely the people! I love being able to walk into Dow and recognize all the friendly faces, and feel comfortable just being myself!”

His favorite thing about our department? “How incredibly devoted the professors are to supporting students. They also succeed in creating a welcoming and fun academic atmosphere that keeps students interested in chemistry/biochemistry.”

Dillon Lee is a Biochemistry major and captain of the ultimate frisbee team. He was also part of the percussion section in Academy Street Winds, K’s symphonic band.
