This is Liverpool Castle.

It was painted in 1878 by Liverpool artist William Gawin Herdman, more than 150 years after the castle had disappeared.

Herdman was attempting to reconstruct how Liverpool Castle may have looked in 1689, with William III’s troops arriving outside its walls.

The castle stood around what is now Derby Square, beside today’s Liverpool ONE.
