My middle and high school teachers told me I would never do anything good in my life because I couldn’t sit still and wasn’t interested in their boring courses. They said I could never be successful because I didn’t fit the box. I still remember my English teacher telling my mom, right in front of me, that I would never be able to speak English. One of my math teachers accused me of cheating on an exam because there was “no way I could have solved it this way.” My solution was different from what she taught, and my parents believed her.

Well, fast forward. Now, my kids’ teachers are telling me to stop teaching my kids cool stuff and “advanced” maths because they’re too advanced and bored in class. They’re complaining that my son is different and should pay more attention. They are complaining my daughter is too focused.

The system is always right. You are always wrong.

But I’m here to tell you: f*ck them. The system is rigged. It’s designed to create sheep—robots who all think the same way. Break the mold. Be free. Learning doesn’t follow a ruleset or have a defined limit. Other ways are just as valid.

If you’re a parent, listen to your kids. Pay attention to what they like, and embrace it. Support them their way. It doesn’t matter what others think. It doesn’t matter if the teachers disagree. You don’t want to crush your kids’ personalities or dreams.

Yes, it’s tough. I know, because I do it. You’ll have to put in more effort to guide their education. You have to work a second job, when they are back from school to start teaching and correct what happened during the day of school. Of course it’s easier to close your eyes and leave it all to the school system—a system that doesn’t care. A machine that crushes aspirations. Because that’s what most people do. So it’s not tour fault. Wake up before it’s too late.

If you’re different and don’t fit the mold, embrace it. Stand up for who you are. But don’t use this as an excuse to stop learning or to avoid being the best at something like math. No. Find your way to learn. Ask the “whys.” Why am I learning this? Where did it come from? Who thought of this, and for what purpose? What’s the history behind it? What can I apply this to? What was the way before this existed? Is there a better way now? Is there another perspective? Start asking these questions. Use tools like ChatGPT. Talk to older people, talk to younger people. Find your crew—others who are different like you. Together, be the best, against all odds, against the system.

If you fit the mold, good for you. Embrace that too. You don’t have to be a rebel to succeed. But challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to question your teachers, to question the system, to question everything. Be bolder. Think bigger. The system is adapted to you, take advantage of it, but don’t let it limit you.

Because, at the end of the day, the people who succeed most in life are the ones who are different. The ones who aren’t sheep. The ones who challenge the status quo.

While my English teacher is still a bad English teacher in the same school, in the same town (actually IDK where she is but I assume), I have grown, I have worked hard and took on a lot of challenges, I’ve traveled, moved to the US, created several companies, and this year, I’ve enrolled and taught more than half a million youth around the world to work hard and think differently. And I never tell them they are not good enough. When they fail, I fail, and I find other ways to make them succeed.

Embrace who you are. Work hard at what you love. Everyone can be successful. Don’t let anyone—especially not a teacher—make you think otherwise.

I regularly privately talk to #ALX_SE grads who are looking for jobs. Finding a job is a lot of work. The two main mistakes they make is not being organized and not applying to enough jobs. So here is a recipe for success:

1. Make sure you have a clear schedule. Apply every day for at least a few hours (meaning at least 10-25 applications per day) and train on interviews every day for at least a few hours.

2. Keep track of every job you applied to. Url, date, who / how did you apply, etc… use excel / google sheet.

3. Most of the companies will not even answer you. That’s “normal”, don’t be discouraged. For my first FT job after graduation, I had to apply to hundreds of companies before I got my job.

4. That’s not a reason not to try to talk to them. Ping them regularly if they don’t give you an answer. Find other ways to reach out to the decision maker. Use your linkedin to find ppl working at this company, talk to them. Keep track of that in your excel file (you can also use @_MariemEhab’s linkntrack dot com extension)

5. Focus in a few job boards that match your criteria and apply to every new job post every single day. For instance if you are looking for a remote job, you can use @AbduuHany & @YoussefCharifH2’s remoteotter dot com. Every day you should apply to 10-25 jobs. No exception, no excuse.

6. Continue training for tech and hr interviews while applying for jobs. You can use @nuux_tv & @Sophie_RB42’s prepforsuccess dot ai for that. Train every single day. At least 2hours. No exception, no excuse.

7. If you get to an interview and didn’t get the job, make sure you ask for feedback so that you can focus your interview training on the right thing. Did you suck at hr questions (i.e. where do tou see yourself in 5y?) or was it a technical problem? Focus on bridging the gap.

Do this relentlessly for a few months and you will get that job. It’s not easy, but that’s the job. Now stop complaining and go get that job!
