Yesterday was intense for all of us, but I’m happy to announce that Mathew’s surgery was successful thanks to the prompt intervention of the Neurosurgeon Dr Tayo Ojo and Marigold hospital who proceeded with the surgery even before collecting the required fee.
He underwent a Laminectomy where a huge mass of inflamed tissue was found to be compressing on a large segment his spinal cord. This has been removed and the tension on the spinal cord relieved.
The boy is now recuperating back in ICU but Dr Tayo Ojo says we’ll still need some time to see how well the spinal cord can heal from the damage.
He will also require a ventilator till the nerve supplying his diaphragm heals and his breathing becomes better.
It’s still unclear when or whether he’ll be able to walk again but the surgeons say his recovery so far has been nothing short of a miracle and he has age on his side so it’s still very possible that he’ll regain full functionality of his legs.
He’s currently under careful observation in ICU, and when all of this is over he’ll need to undergo months of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. One thing I know for sure is regardless of what happens, we’ll hold his hands through all of this and he’ll never have to fight this battle alone. The whole world is solidly behind Mathew now.
We raised well above the money needed for his initial treatment, so we have decided that the extra money raised will be expended towards his well being while he’s at the hospital, his education, and rehabilitation when he begins physiotherapy.
Finally, it has become expedient that we set up health insurance for every child in our Makoko chess academy to prevent future occurrences like this one. We need a solid health partner to help design a sustainable system here.
Mathew’s brother died a few years ago from malaria because his parents couldn’t afford proper healthcare and ascribed his ailment to spiritual attacks.
Same thing happened in Mathew’s case but thankfully his teacher notified me and we were able to get him to the hospital in time.
Mathew will get to Live because we all came together and stood strongly for him when it truly mattered. This is the true essence of our shared humanity, that we can all stand and fight for the downtrodden amongst us on days like this.
God bless everyone who donated, shared and amplified this story. Your kind efforts cumulatively resulted in saving the Boy’s life.
The doctors said if we had delayed even a few hours more, we would have lost him.
Kudos to the incredible staff at Marigold hospital for the amazing care and dedication to Mathew’s recovery.
Dr Tayo Ojo, Dr Femi Fafiola and Dr Adu are the real heroes❤️. Thank you for your service to this country.
The internet can be such a beautiful place in moments like this. A constant reminder that if God gives you any form of influence or platform, please use it purposefully. It is possible to do great things from a small place.
I’ll continue to update everyone on his progress.
Some great news!
Dr Tayo Ojo has volunteered to do the Boy’s surgery. He’s the same Neurosurgeon that saved Aproko Doctor’s life.
Marigold hospital has also agreed to give a good discount.
Please don’t stop sharing and donating. We’re making progress!
Thank you
