@n_quests I feel the same way about people in general, and not just DMs. Without the acceptance of failure there are no lessons to be learnt and no room for one to grow.
@NaviMusing Roleplaying and character expression are key, but ask yourself how much of that is actually in the rules. You can roleplay Monopoly if you want. Is it a roleplaying game? You must discern between what's your personal way of playing a game VS what the game actually is on its own.
@capacle Some of John Wick's games feature contested rolls between the PC and the GM, but instead of determining who wins and who loses, dice determine who's in narrative control for the scene's resolution. This subtle distinction changes a game so much.
@redwyrmofficial Other options for generating random numbers are flipping though big book's pages, looking for the plate numbers of passing by cars, or starting and stopping a chrono with milliseconds.
@redwyrmofficial If both the player snd the GM pick 1-10, how can the result be more than 20? Players could ruin this method by always selecting the highest number that guarantees they don't surpass 20, leaving the actual decision to the GM. If both parties collaborate, it can work though.
@danielhkwan I can see why this is controversial and how this can shatter the illusion for many players, but come on, TTRPGs rules bend from table to table and that's been central to the hobby since the beginning. Who plays any TTRPG strictly RAW? There's no "pure form" of DnD.
@EvSemicolon @danielhkwan Sure. Somewhere out there lies the perfect game for each gaming table, and statistically speaking it's probably not D&D. I encourage everybody in the hobby to play as many and as different games as possible, and they'll surely find some game-changing gems out there.
@SpongeonMaster@danielhkwan That's exactly how I do it as well. For me this strikes the right balance between respecting the game's rules and being a fan of the player's characters.
@Timelordswife And as a GM, don't be afraid to ask your players questions. How does their action look in the fiction, how do they feel about what just happened, what's the quiet player's PC doing while others are getting the spotlight. Make the players be active in the creation of the story.
@Dm_LSP It's great that some tables engage in free roleplaying, but I have the feeling that if they used a different system they'd get better support for the type of game they're already having. With thousands of TTRPGs out there, there must be a better fit for everyone.
