On 16 October 1941, Mirjam was deported to the Litzmannstadt ghetto, at the end of August 1944 to #Auschwitz. She was murdered in a gas chamber.

Czesława Kwoka, a 14‑year‑old Polish girl, was murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp on March 12, 1943. She was killed by an injection of phenol directly into her heart.

Just before her death, she was photographed by fellow prisoner Wilhelm Brasse, who later testified that the SS guard struck her in the face before the photo was taken, the bruise on her lip is visible in the image.

In that haunting portrait, we see the terrified face of a child who did not speak German and had lost her mother only days earlier. Czesława was one of approximately 230,000 children and young people murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The original black‑and‑white photograph, preserved at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, was later colorized by Brazilian artist Marina Amaral, who was deeply moved by Czesława’s image and sought to share it with the world in color.

23 September 1938 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Carla Alice Schaap, was born in Amsterdam.

Carla was the daughter of an Amsterdam notary. When her parents were forced to move to the Amsterdam ghetto in early 1943, Carla was placed in hiding. Her father obtained false identity papers for her under the name “Carla van IJsselstein.”

She was hidden in Laren together with three Jewish sisters: Esther (17), Lena (12), and Julia Zilverberg (10). They were taken care of by Josephina Simonis, who ran a small children’s home.

On 15 November 1943, members of the Rotterdam police’s “Group X” raided the house and arrested Josephina and the four children, who were taken to a detention center in Rotterdam and, on 10 December 1943, transferred to the Westerbork transit camp.

On 8 February 1944, Carla and the Zilverberg sisters were placed on a transport to Auschwitz. To relieve pressure on the Westerbork hospital, this transport included 400–500 sick and vulnerable Jews.

The train arrived at the ramp between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp on 10 February 1944. Upon selection, 142 men and 73 women were registered in the camp. Carla, the three Zilverberg sisters, and 796 other people from the transport were immediately murdered in gas chambers.

Josephina Simonis was deported to Ravensbrück, where she perished in the winter of 1945, one day after her 60th birthday.

Pourtant, en 1900, une jeune Viennoise de 25 ans devient la première femme à obtenir le titre de docteur en médecine à l’université de Vienne.

Elle s’appelle Elise Richter.

Passionnée de langues romanes, elle se bat d’abord pour étudier à l’université alors interdite aux femmes, puis pour y enseigner.
En 1907, elle devient la première femme privat-docent de l’histoire de l’université de Vienne, et en 1921 la première professeure extraordinaire.
Ses cours de philologie romane attirent des étudiants du monde entier.

Lorsque l’Anschluss arrive en 1938, Elise Richter, déjà âgée, est chassée de son poste.
Elle refuse de quitter Vienne, restant auprès de sa sœur. Déportée en 1942, elle meurt à Theresienstadt.

Son nom a longtemps disparu des manuels.
Pourtant, chaque femme qui aujourd’hui enseigne ou dirige une chaire universitaire en Europe centrale marche, d’une certaine manière, sur le chemin qu’elle a ouvert dans un monde qui refusait même de la laisser s’asseoir dans une salle de cours.
