🚨 THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A DAY OF FUN. SOMEHOW, IT ENDED WITH A CHILD DEAD.

There is something deeply unsettling about the reaction to this tragedy.

A young life has been lost. A family is mourning. Yet instead of the conversation being centred on the pain of losing a child, much of the public discussion has shifted towards defending the 53-year-old man accused of stabbing him ,with some even calling for his release.

That alone should make us pause.

Not to decide who is guilty. Not to take the law into our own hands. But to ask ourselves a much bigger question:

How did we get to a point where our children can behave recklessly towards adults and we simply call it “playing”?

Spring Day is supposed to be innocent fun. Water, laughter, friends and memories.

But there is a line between having fun and deliberately invading someone else's personal space, humiliating them, assaulting them or continuing to provoke them after they have made it clear they don't want to participate.

And when that line is crossed, where are the adults?

Because parenting cannot only mean providing food, clothes and education. It also means teaching children that other people have boundaries. It means teaching them that “no” means no. It means teaching them that being part of a group does not give you permission to mistreat someone.

Most importantly, it means teaching them that actions have consequences.

😭 Two families are now living with something that can never be undone.

One family is burying a child.

Another family is dealing with the consequences of an incident that allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation.

There are no winners here.

And while the law must establish exactly what happened and who is responsible, as parents and as a society, we also need to examine the environment we are creating for our children.

We cannot keep laughing off dangerous behaviour with:

“They're just kids.”

“They were only having fun.”

“They didn't mean anything by it.”

Children may not always understand the seriousness of their actions, that is precisely why they need parents to teach them.

Teach them to have fun.

Teach them to enjoy themselves.

Teach them to celebrate.

But also teach them boundaries, respect, empathy and when to STOP.

💔 A family will never look at Spring Day the same way again.

What happened should not become another social-media argument where everyone chooses a side and moves on.

It should be a wake-up call.

Because sometimes the most painful lessons are the ones we learn after it is already too late.

Are graduates leaving the country? Dropping out? Or are we failing to fund them beyond undergraduate studies?

One major problem is postgraduate funding. Government can fund you to get a degree, but where is the money for the Master’s, PhD and research that turns graduates into professors?

And one explanation for the funding constraints has been South Africa’s years of weak economic growth.

We can't celebrate access to university and then wonder why we don't have enough South African academics. The pipeline has to continue beyond the bachelor’s degree.
