1/ NHL save percentage has fallen ten seasons in a row. From .915 in 2015-16 to .896 last year. The goalies didn't get worse. Teams got smarter about where they shoot from.
GSAA = goals saved above average league saved .896 last year, so 27 shots = 2.81 expected goals. hofer gave up 3. 2.81 - 3 = -0.19 3 games in hes +2.38
blues lost 4-2 in chicago tuesday. hofer in net. 17 saves on 19 shots, .895. two of chicago's four were empty netters. GSAA: -0.02 blues outshot them 27-21. spencer knight stopped 25.
sharks tonight.
GSAA is goals saved above average. Shots a goalie faced and figure how many a league average goalie gives up on them. Last season the league saved .896, 19 shots = 1.98 goals. Hofer allowed 2.
1.98 minus 2 is -0.02. Plus means fewer goals than average, minus means more.
blues (1-1) with both binnington (.833) and hofer (1.000) playing full games vs blackhawks (0-3) with spencer knight 2 gp at .875 and arvid söderblom 1 gp at .813. blackhawks goalies split first two games with knight getting most recent game vs sabers
one week into this season it's .892. tiny sample, but not a great start for the goalies.
easy to say goalies got worse. but teams also stopped taking bad shots.
nhlsave % has dropped ten seasons in a row. .915 in 2015-16, .896 last year.
easy to say goalies got worse. but teams also stopped taking bad shots. more of what gets to the net now comes from in tight, off rebounds and off tips.
how much is the shots and how much is the goalies?

blues season starts tonight in dallas. if you think i'm off, or that being a blues guy is showing, tell me.
1/ why the blues. i grew up in st louis and got coached by guys who came through this organization. it's the team i know best. that's also a bias, so i'm putting it out there first.
