Officer Shane Seiber and his partner stepped onto a West Philadelphia porch before dawn on October 10, answering a report of a man with a gun. The suspect opened fire immediately. Seiber, a 𝟏𝟎-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧 of the force, was hit three times and d∗ed at the hospital. His partner, a father of five, was s∗ot 12 times and survived.
Seiber leaves behind a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor. The man charged, 35-year-old 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬, is arraigned on 76 counts including m∗rder and homicide of a law enforcement officer, and was ordered held without bail.
Lewis’s record goes back over a decade, and every time, he walked. Convicted of theft in 2012, he got probation. Convicted of gun offenses in 2013 after firing s∗ots during a fight with his own brother, he got probation again. Pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in 2018, he got probation a third time. Three convictions. Zero prison time.
Then came the case that should have ended it for good. In 2019 he was charged with k!lling Christopher Williams, 32, in a road-rage s∗ooting. A judge acquitted him in 2023 after calling the police investigation deeply flawed. District Attorney 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐊𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐫 later explained why: officer 𝐍𝐚𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐀𝐦𝐢𝐫 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐲, who was dating Lewis’s sister, “𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘺” by inventing a fake alternate suspect — “𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦”, Krasner called it. Crawley was later fired.
The detective on the case, Laura Harris, never secured a warrant for Lewis’s cell phone records. Asked why in a letter to Internal Affairs, the judge noted her answer: “𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.” Harris was later disciplined. Krasner insists his prosecutors did “𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦” to convict Lewis — the case still collapsed on the police work underneath it.
A dirty investigation didn’t just let a m∗rder charge slip away. It left an accused k!ller free on the street for three more years, until he was the one answering a knock at his own door — with a gun, and an officer on the other side.
