The IPPR is a think tank. Think tanks publish proposals. They don't set government policy. The IPPR proposing something is not the same as the government announcing it.

If every think tank proposal became law, we'd have simultaneously abolished and doubled every tax in existence.

But let's address the three proposals on their merits:

NI on pension income. Currently pensioners are exempt from employee NI. The IPPR wants to end that exemption. BUILD UK's position: the state pension should be completely tax-free. Not taxed more. Tax-free.

You paid NI for 40+ years. You don't pay it again in retirement. Private pensions above the £1,500 floor: 5% flat. Not NI. Not income tax rates. Five percent.

Capital gains at 40%. Currently 20% for higher rate taxpayers. Doubling it punishes anyone who invested in a buy-to-let, sold a family business, or cashed in shares they held for decades.

The person who built a small business over 30 years and sells it for retirement shouldn't pay 40% for their life's work. Graduated CGT aligned with income bands is fairer than a flat 40%.

Property wealth tax at 0.65%. Your home isn't income. You can't spend it while living in it. An 85-year-old widow in a house that's risen in value since 1975 doesn't have wealth she can access. She has a postcode that got expensive around her.

She didn't get richer. Her house did. Taxing that is forcing asset-rich, cash-poor pensioners to sell their homes to pay a tax on wealth they can't spend.

The proposals are bad. But "EMERGENCY WARNING" and "ULTIMATE WEALTH GRAB" and "terrifying three-step robbery" is the kind of panic language that stops people thinking and starts them sharing.

The IPPR proposed it. The government hasn't adopted it. If they do, challenge it with facts, not fear.

Last night we had our first major breakthrough into the mainstream.

Thanks to @MartinDaubney, @PatrickChristys and @GBNEWS for covering the National Lottery story following on from our findings last week.

I feel like it’s finally safe to say this out loud: The COVID era was a time of staggering overreach and repeated, official betrayal. They took our freedom, our livelihoods, and our trust, and no one has answered for it.

So I reported 2 sellers on @vinted using the exact same photos to sell high end items - the scam is to send a t-shirt then ask for a return so they can claim they're the 1 being scammed - and @vinted say the sellers are doing nothing wrong.
Scandalous.
