Irish Wheelchair Rugby were drawn against Israel in the European Championship that will take place on May 28. The Irish team plans to protest the match.

Team player Alan Dineen announced that he will boycott the game against Israel and made the following statement:

“I am boycotting the game against Israel because I cannot separate sport from the reality of what is happening in Gaza and Palestine. Through my fundraising work with Aclaí Palestine in the Aida Refugee Camp, I have seen first hand the impact that occupation and violence have on people’s daily lives. Gaza now has one of the highest numbers of child amputees per capita in the world, with thousands of children having lost one or more limbs.

I believe what is occurring constitutes genocide, as described by numerous human rights organisations and legal experts. Sport is a powerful platform that can create social change, and I believe athletes have a responsibility to take a stand when fundamental human rights are at stake.”
