The oldest surviving deck of 52 playing cards, made in the Netherlands, circa 1475 AD. Currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The concept of playing cards is thought to have originated in Asia, making its way to Europe by the late 14th century, likely through trading routes. In the Netherlands, cards became popular during the 15th century as both a pastime and a means of socialization among nobility and the growing merchant class.
