@cylonsarehere@_Sanjuro_art_ This. I always say FFVII did for RPGs in the west what Godeneye 007 did for FPS on Console and Halo for LAN parties.
They didn't invent them, but they took them from niche to mainstream. In a vacuume they may not seem particularly special but these were cultural turning points.
@TheLegendOfLame@The_Zashster@aitaikimochi Completely agree milage will vary.
The issue doesn't haunt conversation around Clair Obscure, Metaphor: Refantazio, Kingdom Come Deliverance, or P3:Reload the same way it does Rebirth though. Not even close. That should suggest SE dropped the ball.
@aitaikimochi I think it was less the minigames themselves and more the amount of content locked behind them. For example, if you wanted to grab all the manuscripts or weapons in preparation for hard mode you HAD to do a lot of the minigames, making them feel less oprional and more grindy.
@TheLegendOfLame@The_Zashster@aitaikimochi That's kinda the point. They shouldn't feel tedious. They should feel like a breath of fresh air — break up the grind. Maybe an alternate way to farm some items/materia/gil
Instead, they added to the grind. Incentivising tedium doesn't make it less tedious, just harder to ignore
@TheLegendOfLame@The_Zashster@aitaikimochi I'm all for rewards, but it's one thing to buy stuff with GP earned in Gold Saucer (play what you enjoy) vs requiring you to get rank 3 in Glide de Chocobo.
If you enjoy a minigame, great. If you don't, it can become tedious. A lot of stuff felt locked behind tedium.
@The_Zashster@aitaikimochi You didn't need to win at darts to level up baton pass, it just sped up the process. Plus the game made it easier as you progressed (shrinking the window and third eye).
I enjoyed Fort Condor. Many didn't. If you wanted the Gilgamesh fight, though, you had to beat it four times.
@The_Zashster@aitaikimochi Queensblood won you more cards for Queensblood. Getting A-rank in all songs unlocked a new one.
To get combat gear you had to do a lot of non-combat related side content at multiple tiers. They're not the same.
@illiFlo@Genki_JPN Andro-Eidos — The originals like Enya are clearly androids but it's kinda up in the air as to whether later generations have some level of artificial biology. Several mention having siblings and few have kids.
In the fusion ending she becomes part human.
