Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the recent surge in dengue cases is being driven by the emergence of a new dengue virus strain.
Speaking during an event in Wadduwa on Friday (26), the Prime Minister said authorities had launched a nationwide dengue control campaign, adding that there are now signs of a gradual decline in infections.
“Although transmission increased with the new virus strain, we carried out a major operation. We are now seeing some reduction,” she said.
Amarasuriya said the Colombo District remains the worst affected, with Maharagama and Colombo suburban areas recording a high number of cases.
She noted that mosquito breeding sites are being identified mainly in public places, including schools, office premises, vacant lands and abandoned construction sites, rather than in residential properties. (Newswire)

@DArmChairCritic Here’s an idea. Rather than awarding 1 large 500mwh project so only few very large companies can bid, break it down into 10 x 50 mwh projects so many smaller players can bid. Makes the bidding more competitive.
Sri Lanka has introduced a temporary 50% surcharge on applicable customs import duties for selected motor vehicles, effective from today (16) and valid for three months.
The measure was announced through an extraordinary gazette issued by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, under Section 10A of the Customs Ordinance, as amended. It applies to both general and preferential import duty bases.
The surcharge covers a wide range of vehicles, including passenger transport vehicles, motor cars, station wagons, racing cars, ambulances, prison vans, hearses, motorhomes, and golf cars, across multiple engine types and specifications.
However, imports backed by Letters of Credit (L/C) opened on or before May 15, 2026, are exempt from the new surcharge. The order was issued under the authority of Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Finance Minister.
