Before, we needed experts. Now we may need far fewer of them.
And what exactly are we afraid of?
If artificial intelligence can make a job unnecessary in many cases, there is no reason to defend that job out of nostalgia.
The problem is not that work disappears.
The problem is that we still distribute wealth through work.
The fear is creating a new situation in which a majority becomes economically unnecessary and poor.
Not losing experts in activities that have become useless.
Yes, “useless.”
David Graeber already had plenty to say about our ability to manufacture bullshit jobs and then turn them into identity, status and moral obligation.
Now a more disturbing contradiction is emerging.
If the models, data, infrastructure and capital belong to a minority, we could end up with a society capable of producing more while needing less human labour.
And then justify the distribution of wealth with a very simple idea.
“You are useless. You deserve to be poor.”
What is disturbing is how reasonable this already sounds to many people.
Anthropic’s new research does not show mass unemployment caused by AI. Quite the opposite. So far, @AnthropicAI finds no systematic increase in unemployment among workers in the most exposed occupations.
That matters.
But it also finds that programmers, customer service workers, data entry workers and financial analysts are among the occupations with the highest observed exposure to AI.
The most exposed workers tend to be more educated and higher paid.
And among workers aged 22 to 25, there is already suggestive evidence that hiring has slowed in exposed occupations.
We still do not know how much human labour AI will make unnecessary.
But perhaps we are asking the wrong question.
If progressively less human labour is needed to produce wealth, protecting every existing profession does not solve the problem.
A person can become unnecessary for production.
They do not become unnecessary for life.
The real conflict begins when economic usefulness becomes the justification for who deserves access to life.

@ORamosBets “Hombre pega a mujer” o “chico pega a chica”.
"INTIMATE_AI"
by Kantfish (Emanuele Giusto), Italian digital artist (ai, photography, native nft's) 🎨
The gaze is firm, magnetic, revealing the full human energy shrouded in darkness, perpetuated by a beam of light.
This is a photographic portrait that sublimates other languages from the film noir, from the comic with a mysterious and bright look. Innovation and experimentation with personal digital technique.

@danheld Absolutely. And I would add “Philosophy/Anthropology”. We need intellectuals reading the map, looking at the big picture and suggesting directions for this movement to be the revolution it’s aimed to be, changing current society organization for better.
