A woman in Texas, 28 years old and 17 weeks pregnant, went to the hospital because she was miscarrying. Doctors confirmed her pregnancy was already failing, but they told her she couldn’t be treated because the fetus still had a detectable heartbeat, saying it would be a crime to intervene under the state’s strict abortion ban. For 40 hours she waited, exposed to infection and in pain while medical care was delayed. Only after the heartbeat stopped did the hospital act. Three days later, she died of sepsis from the untreated miscarriage.
