Venom was never going to get a subtle Secret Lair.

Venom Unleashed leans completely into the Symbiote at its most dangerous. Mark Bagley brings his Spider Man experience to the artwork, with Jay David Ramos adding the color treatment that gives the drop its dark, aggressive identity.

Damnation. Dark Ritual. Tendrils of Agony.

These are already cards with a certain attitude. Put Venom on them and the whole thing feels appropriately sinister.

It is also a great example of how a Secret Lair can work as a collectible even when the appeal has less to do with traditional Magic aesthetics and more to do with the character being represented.

For Marvel and Spider Man collectors, this is Venom doing what Venom does best.

Deadpool is a great example.

The drop currently sells for $67.51 sealed, while the five main cards total $49.45.

But then there's the bonus card.

Blacker Lotus is currently $208.26.

That single bonus card is worth more than four times the value of every card in the main drop combined.

Basic lands don't have to be basic.

The Strange Sands was part of the second Chaos Vault release, built around a simple disagreement: should basic lands be sold individually or as a cycle?

The answer was apparently: why not both?

Scott Balmer created five surreal landscapes, and Wizards split them into individual Secret Lair releases. Each release gave you 10 copies of that basic land, letting you choose the version that fit your collection instead of buying an entire cycle.

The result is a wonderfully strange piece of Secret Lair history, and exactly the kind of basic land that can make a Commander deck feel a little more personal.
