Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is:

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time. As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!). Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy. It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems. I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years!

Minimum salaries as per experience in software development in India that you should aim for in 2026 :

2 years experience - 10 LPA
5 years experience - 22 LPA
7 years experience - 30 LPA
10 years experience - 42 LPA
12 years experience - 50 LPA
15 years experience - 70 LPA

I think these are the minimum numbers that you should be looking at. If you are earning below this , you need to fix it.

Meet Anupratee Bharadwaj. No https://t.co/YSvOF5fxhn, nothing. She was training to become a commercial pilot. But then COVID came, and the entire aviation industry collapsed. So, she had two options :- one was to wait until it reopened, or build an entirely new future.

She chose the second!

After earning a bachelor's degree in aviation, Anupratee had spent years preparing for her commercial pilot license. But the pandemic grounded those plans.

In search of career options, she got to know about the IIT Madras BS program, and she joined the Data Science course. And even though it was difficult for her initially, eventually, she learnt.

Today, Anupratee is working as a Software Developer at Gekko, an Amsterdam-based company, and is the Co-founder of Spirelia, an AI startup recently incubated at IIT Madras Research Park. 🔥

The more curious you are, the more opportunities you create.

After 5 years in tech in India, my advice:

• Never join an Edtech company.
• Never get emotionally attached to your job or company.
• Don't join a service based company.
• Only consider joining a startup if the founders are credible people and you believe in their vision.
• Switch to a famous product based MNC asap, ideally FAANG. Work there for at least some time just to get it on your resume.
• If you're not at a top tier company, concentrate more effort on switching to a better company than trying to get promoted at your current org.

I read around 30-40 Devops and other job posts this week. The same lies appeared in almost all of them.

Lie 1: "Fast-paced environment"
Means: we're understaffed and the processes are broken.

Lie 2: "Wear multiple hats"
Means: you'll be doing 3 jobs for the pay of 1.

Lie 3: "Work hard, play hard"
Means: we expect long hours and there's a ping pong table.

Lie 4: "No two days are the same"
Means: nothing is documented and everything is on fire regularly.

Lie 5: "Collaborative team"
Means: there are other people here. That's all we can promise.

Lie 6: "Competitive salary"
Means: we won't tell you the number until the offer.

The honest JD would say:
"We have tech debt. The team is small. The problems are hard. The people are good and trying. Here's what we pay."

LONDON: Banaz Mahmod, a Kurdish immigrant from Iraq, was subjected to female genital mutilation at the age of 8. When she turned 20, she was married off to a 30 year old Kurdish man who used to beat, starve and confine her. Banaz finally escaped and met a youth she loved. To avenge this 'dishonour' her family decided to murder her.

Her father, Mahmod Babakir Mahmod, and uncle, Ari Agha Mahmod hired a hitman Mohamad Hama to carry out the killing.

The murder took place in the living room of the family home, with Banaz enduring two-and-a-half hours of torture.

Following the torture, Banaz was strangled with a bootlace before her body was placed into a suitcase.

Hama bragged about rping her and claimed he stamped on her head to "get her soul out".

The father, uncle, hitman and two cousins of Banaz are currently serving minimum sentences of 21-23 years.

Never forget that there were no Iraqi refugees until the US and its allies destroyed the country in 2003 under the fake pretext that Saddam Hussein had orchestrated the 9/11 terror attacks. Immediately, millions of Iraqis were forced to leave their homes.

Islamic fundamentalism, unknown in Iraqi society under Saddam, crept into the country thanks to the American invasion.

Call Saddam a tyrant if you want but under him Iraqis had freedom of religion and marriage. Very few Iraqis attended mosques as it was a secular country. Mullahs had zero influence over ordinary citizens. Iraq was perhaps the only Muslim country where people could freely celebrate Valentine's Day.

Iraq wasn't perfect but ordinary Iraqis had a standard of living that was better than most developing countries.

An Iraqi physicist now living in New Zealand told me that it would take 200 years to fix what America destroyed in 4 weeks.
