@wilder_kathryne@HeatherCato9 Haha, definitely need more funding... but also really need more PD because like all the textbooks have been saying, ALL teachers need to know how to work with EBs these days. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A4: Recruit teachers from the language communities, allow teacher apprenticeship models that provide certification in TESOL upon completion while gaining experience throughout. #chantesol654
@SelMelvin@HeatherCato9 Yes! Definitely should use a different measurement. It is crazy what they expect of emerging bilinguals that is so completely invalid! #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A3 cont:Test them in their home language and get an accurate idea of academic performance level to determine if they qualify for G&T. And make G&T bilingual!! #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A3: There is data showing EBs “poor performance” on standardized tests so they are seen as unfit for G&F programs even though the standardized tests were invalid. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A2: Lack of early childhood education. Exposed to less content and more remedial classwork. Labeled with false or nonexistent learning disabilities. Exclusion from G&T programs. Inequitable resources (technology, funding, facilities, quality teachers). #chantesol654
@wilder_kathryne@HeatherCato9 Oh good point about interactions with digital tools... I always get caught up in books and sometimes don't think as much about the technology haha. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A1: Having teams of multicultural and multilingual students, collaboration, providing challenge and rigor, high expectations, meaningful texts that are relatable, making accommodations #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9#chantesol654 I would love to incorporate more of a bilingual approach into my classroom. Even if it isn't the program the district uses, I could make adaptations in my own classroom.
@wilder_kathryne@HeatherCato9 I love the mention of S connecting to each other! Important for all S to learn about the various cultures and backgrounds. (Hopefully makes for more understanding/tolerant S!) #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A7: Make sure they are materials/texts that the S can make at least one connection to so they are not completely overwhelmed with all new content/language/structure, etc. Also make sure there are ways to help front-load through photos, video clips, etc. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A6: It helps validate the student's thoughts and feelings, and helps the T learn more about the S, not just as a writer, but as a human. Typically S will be more motivated to write and will feel important to the T, which helps aid the desire to work hard and learn. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A5: Letting EBs write about their own life experiences, letting them write in their home language, and keeping open ended journals are all ways to incorporate culturally responsive writing opportunities that will also build confidence (and skill) in EBs. #chantesol654
@wilder_kathryne@HeatherCato9 I'm a K-2 teachers so I especially loved the mention of drawing/speaking answers because that is an accommodation I provided for anyone in the class at that age! Can see how it is especially beneficial for EBs. #chantesol654
@HeatherCato9 A3: Assess S in home language or in bilingual mode (Q in one language, A in another). Conduct dynamic assessments (see what S can do with and without T help). Use observation (anecdotal notes) as an “assessment” or to aid in creating/analyzing assessments. #chantesol654
