Namjoon, I KNOW you didn’t post your Grammy story alongside that photo of yourself holding the newspaper in the 2.0 MV by accident. Just hear me out.

Here’s what I found in the articles printed in the newspaper he’s holding:

“Brand New 2.0 Launches… Complete Strategic Overhaul.”

“The newly unveiled ‘Version 2.0 Update’ is expected to mark a major turning point—not merely as a software upgrade, but as a transformation capable of reshaping humanity’s digital DNA.”

The newspaper’s narrative aligns so closely with what BTS have been trying to tell us.

They’ve entered a new 2.0 era—one that can no longer be defined or contained by the boundaries of the industry. They outgrew those boundaries a long time ago, becoming a turning point that changed the very DNA of the modern music industry.

The 2.0 era is about BTS defining the rules of the game themselves and creating new value. It’s an era where Grammy recognition no longer seems to be the ultimate goal. Instead, they’re focusing on what truly matters: making music that isn’t judged by its language or where it comes from.

The success of ARIRANG exceeded every possible expectation, breaking industry records—exactly what the newspaper talks about. They’ve also made it clear that they want to create music without being confined by the industry’s long-established rules.

This doesn’t read like a protest against the Grammys. It feels more like a declaration that they’ve outgrown those boundaries. It’s not about fighting the system—it’s about moving beyond it.

We don’t need the Grammys to define the value of our music anymore. WE’RE GOING TO MAKE MUSIC FOR THE SAKE OF MUSIC.

That’s what I took away from all of this.

A Jungian reading places the MV between the persona & the shadow. For BTS, their public selves carry unusual pressure: they are expected to be bulletproof, resilient, talented, attractive & emotionally available. Each member has a familiar role, but no role can contain them

This pressure sits within a Korean context that admires achievement while valuing modesty, restraint & awareness of one’s role within a group

RM described this tension during his appearance on Fashion Neurosis when speaking about normality: “I should not be noticed.” While his remarks are personal, they also reflect a wider social norm. For RM, whose work depends on being seen, the wish carries both the exhaustion of fame & what modesty asks of him

Going back to the MV: the MV seems to loosen each member’s familiar persona in an unexpected way. Jung Kook, the golden maknae, known to be capable at everything, appears overwhelmed under a shower. Jimin is shown in a bedroom, suggesting a need for intimacy that public life tends to strip away. V’s bruised face interrupts the expectations related to his “alien” beauty. j-hope, usually associated with brightness & energy, is quiet & alone in a forest. SUGA approaches a damaged doorway & holds a phone towards a statue, as though trying to reach something buried or unheard. Jin is alone in the garden, with no one to entertain or mood to manage. RM, the leader who is expected to know their next direction, gives up the driver’s seat. On the surface, these scenes may seem like the inverse of the roles they usually play

Normal also continues a longer thread in BTS’s work. In Black Swan, the shadow appears as a threat. Here, the lyrics stay with the confusion of 2 sides of a coin, neither fully true & the pressure to show everything when they no longer know what “everything” means

The shadow can hold exhaustion, loneliness & the freedom to fail. It can also contain qualities a person has learned to hide, what Jungian thinkers sometimes call the golden shadow: intelligence, beauty, kindness & talent pushed away after attracting jealousy, mockery or suspicion

In a culture that admires excellence while discouraging overt self-display, the golden shadow becomes especially complicated. You are expected to achieve great things, but carry those achievements quietly

That is where the swan inside the house could take on another meaning. It belongs on open water but appears indoors, trapped, like brilliance that has been contained

BTS have often been criticised through the qualities associated with their success. Kindness has been interpreted as calculation, elegance as weakness, intelligence as pretension & hard-won skill as AI or manufactured (a common trope applied to Asians)

Their decision not to submit any music for the next Grammy Awards gives this another context. The announcement followed the creation of a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. Each member said they wanted music to be heard & loved as music, rather than divided by region or language

After years of pursuing this milestone, they have chosen not to seek it within a category that places their work inside a specifically Asian boundary. Their Korean identity remains central to ARIRANG, but so does their roots in music (meaning MUSIC & not Korean music)

Their decision feels close to the golden shadow at the centre of Normal. BTS are not hiding what is extraordinary in their work, nor are they allowing others to set the terms under which that excellence can be recognised

Those words, posted by all seven members of BTS, are far more than an announcement.
They are a movement.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that ARIRANG was created to compete -and win- for every major award that exists.
As I have said many times before, very little in today’s music industry genuinely surprises me anymore.
Artists keep doing the same things they did 20 years ago.
Most releases follow familiar formulas, safe bets, nothing fresh.
ARIRANG didn’t.

The sounds, the composition, the music, and every aspect of it.
From promos to wardrobe and everything in between.
The meaning behind it, the instruments, the inspiration, and the overall innovation are what made it one of the greatest albums I have heard in a very long time.

To me, the moment the Grammys introduced a separate Asian Pop category instead of recognizing artists in the existing major categories was the moment they stopped pretending.
The moment they showed the world exactly who they are:
The biggest opposition to BTS.
It is, coincidentally, the greatest giveaway of how threatened they felt.
BTS was considered the most likely winner of all major nominations at the Grammys. That is a fact.

Choosing not to submit the album isn’t an act of resentment.
It’s an act of self-respect.
It is BTS refusing to seek validation from an institution they no longer believe reflects the values they stand for. It is choosing the integrity and respect of their work over the prestige of a trophy.

That takes an extraordinary amount of confidence. It requires letting go of ego and recognizing that your art has already fulfilled its purpose without waiting for someone else to declare its worth.

It makes me feel incredibly proud of their values and who they are as artists, but mostly as humans.
It makes me incredibly happy to see how, with or without Grammys, BTS Paves The Way.

And just as an afterthought…
Anyone who wins the category will always know that their win was not theirs, but rather that they won because BTS didn’t submit their work.
And if you are winning a Grammy but not going against the worthy opponent who was supposed to be, can you consider yourself a winner?
