Heidegger argued that the last stage of European civilisation would be one of continuous degeneration and corruption without any definitive collapse. Every aspect of European culture would rot without ever dissolving. He thought Spengler’s view of a cyclical end was too optimistic. We would suffer a thousand fatal wounds without finally dying, zombified while alive. According to Heidegger, going down opens possibilities for authenticity. It clears the field. Instead, we will wither away.

Had he possessed a taste for mythological naming, Heidegger would have called European civilisation a Promethean one, a civilisation refined only to suffer innumerable deaths.

One of the genuinely funny moments in Goebbels’ diaries, revealing the levels of corruption around Mussolini, is Edda Mussolini trying to bribe Hitler. Yes, she actually offered him money. Let's read:

In this connection she tried to settle some money questions. Ciano has brought about 6,000,000 lire with him from Italy. Knut Hamsun published this obituary after Hitler’s death, while every other artist was spitting on his memory to win favour with the Allied occupiers:

'I am not worthy to speak up for Adolf Hitler, and to any sentimental rousing his life and deeds do not invite.

Hitler was a warrior, a warrior for humankind and a preacher of the gospel of justice for all nations. He was a reforming character of the highest order, and his historical fate was that he functioned in a time of unequaled brutality, which in the end failed him.

Thus may the ordinary Western European look at Adolf Hitler. And we, his close followers, bow our heads at his death.

German will to power was so personified in Hitler’s image that the postwar resignation of the Germans to becoming great ever again, and the inculcated hatred of Europe, took the personal form of hating Hitler.

Adorno understood this. In his world, everything that had to do with Europe was reduced to the suspect status of causing Hitler. For him, hating Europe became the prerequisite to preventing Hitlerism. Adorno is right about many things if you read him in reverse.

The defeat of Israel in the international court of public opinion doesn't point to the defeat of international Jewry but to its absolute and impressive postwar success. They cannot even bracket the mongrelised world order they have built to allow for a small Jewish state.
