Jesus Christ is far more than a gentle teacher offering comforting words. He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the King of kings, and the victorious Savior who confronts evil with truth and authority. When Jesus entered the temple and drove out the money changers, He demonstrated His zeal for righteousness and His intolerance for corruption. The same Lord who overturned tables in the temple is still calling His people to stand boldly for truth in a world that increasingly rejects His authority. Faith is not passive surrender to darkness; it is courageous obedience to the One who has already overcome the world.

The Christian life is a spiritual battle. Jesus went to the cross and fought the greatest battle in human history for the redemption of our souls. Through His sacrifice and resurrection, He secured victory over sin, death, and the devil. As believers, we are called to resist the enemy, endure hardship as good soldiers of Christ, and advance the Kingdom of Light. We do not fight for victory—we fight from victory. Because Christ is victorious, we can stand with confidence, knowing that the battle belongs to the Lord and that His truth will prevail forever.

I also want to honor Oscar Laurie, who adopted me when I was just a little boy and gave me his last name. He showed me what it meant to be loved and claimed as a son — a gift I've carried with me my whole life.

I have never known anyone like President Jeffrey R. Holland. Words were the brushes of his artistry, passion the oil of his paint, and love of Jesus Christ the canvas on which he painted. Like no one else, he had the capacity to break through a teleprompter or a pulpit or a microphone and squeeze my heart.

I loved seeing him laugh. I loved hearing him teach. I loved being with him. When assigned to speak in the same meeting with him, I realized I was out of my league, much like I would have been had I ever tried to play basketball with Michael Jordan.

When I learned of President Holland’s last hospitalization, I felt something a bit different than with his prior hospitalizations. He had completely worn himself out in the service of the Master. He had given all he could—and more. He had “fought a good fight… finished [his] course… [and] kept the faith" (see 2 Timothy 4:7).

I will deeply miss the President of my Quorum, my fellow Apostle, and my dear friend.

Father in Heaven,
We thank You for Your truth that stands firm when the world trembles. You have called us through the gospel so that we might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Strengthen our hearts, Lord, against every deception and false teaching that rises up to confuse or distract us. Let our minds be anchored in Your Word, our faith rooted in Your promises, and our hope fixed on Your return.

Remind us that the man of lawlessness may rise, but his reign will fall before the breath of Your Son. Keep us from fear and fill us instead with the peace that comes from knowing You are sovereign over all things. Help us to hold fast to the traditions of truth passed down through Scripture, and to walk worthy of the calling You have given us.

Lord Jesus Christ, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort our hearts and establish us in every good work and word. May our lives reflect Your steadfast love, and may Your glory be seen through us until You come again.
