Who remembers Jackie "Moms" Mabley? One of 12 children, she was born Loretta Mary Aiken in March of 1894 (yes, 1894… that's not a typo) in Brevard, N.C., to parents who died in separate tragic incidents before she turned eleven. By the age of 14, Mabley was twice raped and had two children who were given up for adoption. Shortly after her second child's birth, she made her way to Cleveland, Oh., where she joined a black vaudeville group as an all-around entertainer. In 1921, at the age of 27, Mabley began performing with the married duo, Butterbeans and Susie, which led to her debut at Harlem’s Cotton Club. During the early 1930s, she established herself as a stage performer. By the end of the decade, she became the first female comedian to perform at the Apollo Theater, and by the 1950s, Mabley was earning up to $10,000 a week at the Apollo, making her one of the most highly paid performers of that era. By the early 1960s, she began to build a white audience with her 1962 performance at Carnegie Hall, then a series of appearances on mainstream television shows including "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" and "The Ed Sullivan Show".
