A 15-year-old Chinese girl, Chen Meiyao陈美瑶, serving as an air defense lookout in Chongqing's Nanshan during the war against Japan, 1941.
Originally from Kunshan, Jiangsu, the outstanding student was later recommended to study electrical engineering at National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming in 1943.
She continued her studies at Caltech in 1947, earned her PhD in 1950, and remained in the United States, teaching at universities including UC Berkeley.
She passed away in Seattle in 2021 after contracting COVID-19.
