Let’s talk about Benedetta and Bartolomea.

Bartolomea arrives at the convent looking for refuge. Instead, she becomes the one thing Benedetta’s carefully ordered world has no place for.

Benedetta has spent her life surrounded by rules, devotion and the certainty that her body belongs to something greater than herself. Bartolomea is considerably less interested in keeping things so neatly arranged.

Naturally, complications follow.

Curiosity becomes intimacy, intimacy becomes desire, and suddenly the distance between sacred and forbidden isn’t nearly as comfortable as Benedetta would like it to be.

But Benedetta never turns their relationship into a simple story of repression meeting liberation. Benedetta remains ambitious, elusive and impossible to reduce to either saint or sinner. Her visions, her growing authority and her desire for Bartolomea exist alongside one another, sometimes sincerely, sometimes uneasily, and sometimes with motives the film deliberately refuses to make simple.

Bartolomea makes those contradictions personal.

What begins behind convent walls becomes inseparable from questions of faith, control and who gets to decide which desires are sacred and which deserve punishment. Even as the balance of power between them shifts, their attraction remains one of the few things neither institution nor doctrine can neatly contain.

Some forbidden lovers break the rules. Others make you question who had the right to write them in the first place.

Benedetta and Bartolomea?

They crossed the line between faith and desire — and never made it easy to tell where one ended and the other began.
