@TalesofKaimere That is weird. Maybe something else was going on that pushed them towards shorter jaws, or maybe, if grazing is the sole answer, there's a still undiscovered grazing form in the middle of those two taxa? Maybe something about the trees changed that pushed towards shorter heads?

@TalesofKaimere I'm not familiar with where everything is placed on the Elephant family tree, is it possible that mastodon evolved from grazing ancestors into a browser, so they're secondarily short-faced so to speak?

@Riamus01 I think part of this depends on how you're breaking down the groups. You could easily lump Dinosaurs and Crocodiles together as Archosaurs, along with pterosaurs, and say Archosaurs conquered he land, sea, and sky as easily as you can say mammals did.
