@cullenroche Yeah, I guess this varies a lot by person. I've got three kids entering college, and tuition is completely unpredictable because of how random scholarship levels seem to be. Mortgage feels very unpredictable because I don't know how long I'll want to work before downsizing.

@cullenroche The variance of liability magnitude and timing feels higher to me than that of the market. Maybe the kid doesn't marry, maybe you're forced into retirement - or never quit, maybe a relative needs support. If you plan for high enough variance, it just becomes a total return plan.

@LinchZhang My guess: higher turnover of individuals would increase the rate of adaptation, and there would be a (species-specific) tradeoff with the amount older individuals are able to aid the fitness of the young.
