So many wonderful tributes to Ann from those who were her proper friends, so hard to add anything new. But here's a modest postcript, because I wanted to honour her. So a very personal reflection on a totally unlikely relationship across the political aisles. Thanks to @spikedonline for asking me to write it.
I rarely post on here anymore, but I have to say to @PeterTatchell:
It shouldn't take the news that an elderly woman was murdered rather than dying of natural causes to change a post from revelry & name-calling to 'R.I.P. Ann.'
The sheer hypocrisy of that cannot be lost on any person of good character.
This is why so many people - gay, straight and anywhere in between - find your rhetoric misogynist, divisive & hateful. People are allowed hold different opinions. We can disagree with them, we can even judge them, but every life is of value and we all leave loved ones behind.
A little bit of kindness, compassion and, quite honestly, basic human decency can go a long way.
"This morning, Mass was offered for the repose of the soul of Ann Widdecombe at Westminster Cathedral, where she was sometimes the Lector at the Sunday evening mass. We pray for her family and friends at this time. May she rest in peace."
~ Archbishop Richard Moth
We often disagreed but privately Ann Widdecombe never confused status with worth. She treated everyone with the same dignity whether they could do anything for her or not. That was her idea of justice. After such a terrible death, she is owed no less.
The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together. Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life. #ApostolicJourney

This country is about 3 good vibes away from renationalising the railways and handing out medals to dinner ladies. #Euro2025

When the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, was asked in an interview about the barrage of insults being directed at him and other German leaders by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, his reply was: “Don’t feed the troll.”
