You misunderstand me. I am opposed to surrogacy in all cases. I do not think same-sex couples should be allowed to engage in it, and this is not a right currently afforded to heterosexuals. So I will ask again: what would be the negative consequence of same-sex couples being given the same rights as heterosexual couples?
@ee_start@Alade_Archaman Yeah, I understand. I disagree, personally, with this overly cautious attitude, but then I am an outsider in China and I always will be. My heart breaks for my LGBT friends though.
I know, it’s infuriating. If someone comes home drunk and decides to take out his frustration on his family, the local police will often decide it’s a ‘family matter’ and in the interests of stability ask the parties involved to mediate rather than dealing with the violent individual according to the law. In this sense, Mao Zedong was right to try to rid China of these feudal attitudes during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Confucianism is a plague.
@ee_start@Alade_Archaman I’m not talking about metaphysical demands. I’m asking what would be the downside to same-sex couples being afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples?
@X1707c99@Alade_Archaman I’m not talking about surrogacy, I’m talking about same-sex couples being afforded the same rights (not privileges; I am not asking about anyone being placed above anyone else) as heterosexual couples.
I get that and I don’t think outside NGOs should be allowed to interfere with China’s internal affairs. My question is more in the sense of if same-sex couple were afforded the same rights as straight couples, what would be the negative effects of that? I’m not talking about violating Confucian values because, really, who cares about Confucius?
@wnghu229357 You cannot induce someone to be gay. You are a fool, a wittering nobody with nothing to say and nobody that would be interested in listening even if you did manage, somehow, to put together a thought that was worth pondering.
It is not a case of me wanting either myself or my son to be treated as a superior; that couldn’t be further from the truth. Already, however, he has experienced teasing from other children and I myself have witnessed the bullying of mixed-race children in China, so whether your claim that this doesn’t happen is down to wilful ignorance or something else, I’m not sure.
Regardless, your proposition that LGBT people should not be allowed to marry or adopt children because it may lead to the child experiencing bullying or lead to human trafficking is so ridiculous, so absurd, so lacking in evidence and basic human feeling that I feel we are never going to be reconciled on this issue. Best of luck to you.
@wangfan1111 My son is half-Chinese. It is possible, even likely, that he will be discriminated against in China or experience bullying at school. Should I not have had him? Is his existence tainted because of this possibility?
That is, I’m afraid, absolute nonsense. By your logic, same-sex couples won’t have children anyway whether they’re married or not so what’s the harm? Adopted children of same-sex couples potentially facing stigmatisation or discrimination is surely an issue for schools to deal with as they would with any other case of bullying which, as I’m sure you know, happens at every school in the world. As for the point about child trafficking, I’m almost speechless. This is the sort of baseless, scare-tactic homophobia that was rampant when I was a child and had, I naïvely assumed, mostly disappeared. If I were you, I would be ashamed of being so ignorant.
@wangfan1111 Let’s do a thought experiment. Say that same-sex marriage was implemented in China tomorrow. Which other group would have their rights encroached upon? Who else is harmed if this right is granted?
I’m afraid that if you think the acceptance of family members is the only obstacle facing transgender people in China then you are gravely mistaken. I would encourage you strongly to speak to transgender people here with an open mind and understand their material conditions, the difficulties they face and so on.
@reallge@amber_medusozoa Now you’re talking strategy and tactics—that is a question for the community to resolve itself. I don’t think the views of individuals within the community determines whether they deserve equal rights or not in an abstract sense.
