For those of you who are starting a new job in January 2026, here are some things you should clarify with HR before starting:

1. Salary Structure.
Ask about the salary structure, including the basic salary, KPI (Key Performance Indicator) bonuses, allowances, and other benefits.

2. Allowances.
Inquire about any allowances such as overtime (OT), phone, meal, and transport, and how they are paid (e.g., reimbursement, fixed amount, NSSF deductions).

3. KPIs.
Find out what Key Performance Indicators are expected for your position and whether they are assessed monthly or quarterly.

4. New Employee Training.
Ask if there is any training provided for new staff.

5. Probation Period.
How long is the probationary period, and is there a salary increase upon completing probation?

6. Annual Leave and Application Process.
Inquire about the annual leave policy and how to apply for leave.

7. Growth Opportunities.
Discuss opportunities for career development within the company.

8. Salary Increment.
Ask how often salary increases occur (e.g., annually) and whether they are based on experience or fixed percentages. Also, inquire if there are other ways to increase your salary.

9. Working Hours.
Find out if you are required to work on weekends, if there are work-from-home options, or if there is a hybrid work arrangement.

I didn’t know she was keeping count.

Last night my girlfriend quietly said:

“You never notice the little things anymore.”

I laughed it off… thought she was being dramatic.

This morning, while she was in the shower, her notebook fell out of her bag.
I picked it up to put it back.

I didn’t mean to read it.
But the page it opened to froze me.

At the top she wrote:

“Things I wish he’d notice…”

And the list hit me like a punch:

– “I wait for his messages even when I’m tired.”
– “I dress up for him even when he doesn’t look.”
– “I listen to every detail he says.”
– “I hype him even when I’m hurting.”
– “I love him loudly… he loves me quietly.”
– “I don’t think he knows how much I’m trying.”

I just sat there staring at the page, feeling like someone switched on a light in a room I had been walking through blindly.

She came out of the shower smiling, asking what we should eat today…
And all I could think was:

How long has she been loving me while feeling unseen?

Sometimes the people who give you the most…
Are the ones you notice the least.

Don’t wait until you lose them to realize they were trying.
