Something to remember about biology is that it is soft and squishy, both literally and figuratively. Almost nothing is as rigidly well defined as we imagine it to be. Proteins often have no singular rigid conformation, they often do several different things at once, a given gene can encode multiple different peptides, etc. And this kind of behavior exists at all levels of life.
