The Broken Window Theory
In Malcom Gladwell's book “The Tipping Point,” he discusses “that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips and spreads like a wildfire.”
There are many nuggets of wisdom throughout this book but one of the many that stood out to me was
The Broken Window Theory.
Gladwell states that basically if no one fixes a broken window, then people walking by that window will assume no one is in charge and no one cares.
From there, more windows will get broken and it will spread from building to building which will lead to more crime until ultimate anarchy ensues.
While this is an epidemic theory of crime, the idea is applicable to many different areas of our lives.
When you are any kind of leader, you must be able to recognize and repair the broken windows amongst your team.
Let's say you have a rule of tucking your shirt in, but as time goes on shirts come untucked and nothing is said about it. When that issue is not fixed, then members of the team (almost without even realizing) will slowly start to get the sense that no one really cares.
Then little by little more windows get broken. People showing up late, messy work areas, negative communication, deadlines missed, and it keeps spiraling till your team is in chaos and it is too late.
The little things can make big differences, and as a leader, if you do not take care of those broken windows early, your team members will assume you do not care about really anything and it becomes a slippery slope.
But this theory extends more than just teams,
it can also be applied in our personal lives.
When we do not repair the broken windows in our lives, we are just doing damage to ourselves. However, it seems so miniscule at the time that we don't seem to care.
We hit snooze and oversleep.
We take a few days off from the gym.
We drink a little more than we should.
We start eating more fast food.
These are all just a few seemingly harmless things that happen and are okay from time to time. However, when we do not recognize them as broken windows and repair them immediately, we are giving ourselves the free pass that more of this is acceptable.
We will continue to break more and more windows of our lives without realizing that we are creating inner anarchy until we are at a point where it is very difficult to recover.
This might sound like an exaggeration, but the more we left windows of our lives unrepaired, the more we say “ahhh its okay” or “thats no big deal,” or “its just one.” We are just leading ourselves into a place where we do not want to be.
We all have broken windows in our teams, relationships, and personal lives, we just need to make sure we repair those windows before they lead to bigger problems.
