In all seriousness, I don’t know how old you are or where you’re from, but 9/11 was one of the absolute hardest, worst days that anyone now over the age of 30 — and especially anyone from the tristate area — can possibly remember.

Father NotGaetti went to work in Manhattan that morning and I have never known fear or panic like I experienced when he didn’t come home that day and there was no way to reach him.

I have never known relief like when he finally walked through the door the next day with his briefcase and suit and shoes caked in ash and debris.

If you didn’t experience 9/11 the way some of us did, you will never understand how latching onto moments like Piazza’s home run or Sosa’s sprint through the outfield carrying the flag gave us something vital, something restorative.

Piazza’s homer rallied an entire city to get back up. Sosa, a Dominican-born player, sprinting around Wrigley and rounding the bases with an American flag showed an inspiring, compassionate solidarity when people needed it most.

The love of baseball is something I have shared with Father NotGaetti for my entire life and, 23 years after the scariest day of my life, I’m more grateful than ever that we still get to talk ball.
