On August 29 and 30, I had the pleasure of welcoming Yasuo Takagi, President of the Suwa International Friendship Association, and his team in St. Louis.
This year marks the 51st anniversary of the sister city bond between Suwa, Nagano, and St. Louis—a friendship woven through decades. On August 29, a moment suspended in time unfolded: Mr. Yoshinori Watanabe of Yamamoto Group returned to St. Louis for the first time since the 1974 signing of the sister city agreement. Beside him stood Yoshiko Michell, who came to St. Louis in 1970 and has spent over fifty years sharing the art of Ikebana in the United States. She had also been present at the 1974 signing ceremony. In that long-awaited reunion, after fifty-one years, past and present seemed to converge—a graceful testament to enduring friendship and the timeless bonds that weave generations across decades.
Keiichi Fujimori, Vice President of the Suwa International Friendship Association, has been visiting St. Louis twice a year since the 1980s, bringing high school students from Suwa each spring and attending the Japanese Festival every August—all undertaken with dedication and entirely on a volunteer basis. Eleven years ago, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Suwa–St. Louis sister city relationship, Mr. Fujimori personally donated a monument of Suwa-produced Teppēi stone, installed in Seiwa-en at the Missouri Botanical Garden. In June 2024, he gifted another monument of the same Suwa stone, this time installed in Suwa’s Stone Sculpture Park to mark the 50th anniversary. Together, these memorials stand as enduring symbols of friendship and the continued promise of cultural exchange.
On August 30, I was inspired to meet three extraordinary Japanese high school students visiting from Suwa at Seiwa-en during the festival. Their curiosity, energy, and promise illuminate a bright future for this sister city relationship.
Sustained by the devotion of many—from those who have long given of themselves to the bright promise of youth—the bond between Suwa and St. Louis continues to flourish. I look forward to seeing this friendship blossom ever anew, as future generations nurture a living legacy of exchange, understanding, and mutual respect.
