This is the Nuvvula podi or Sesame powder in my lunch box. I have it daily for lunch. Nuvvula Podi (Sesame Seeds Powder) is a staple, aromatic, and nutritious Andhra-style roasted spice powder, known for its deep earthy, nutty flavour. It is commonly used as a side accompaniment for hot steamed rice with ghee, idli, and dosa.

A combination of dried red chillies, cumin seeds, and sometimes lentils (dal) offers a savory and slightly spicy taste. The powder is often roasted and then ground to a coarse texture to enhance the crunch and flavour, rather than a smooth paste.

It is extremely high in calcium, making it excellent for bone health, and is a rich source of iron, protein, and healthy fats. Three American citizens aged 53 65 and 66 who entered India on tourist visas have been issued Leave India notices by Pune police.

They arrived in India between 19 and 21 April 2026 and had been staying at a hotel in Pimpri Chinchwad since the evening of 26 April. On the morning of 27 April in the Shukrawar Peth area they approached a private cab driver and began distributing leaflets printed in English Hindi and Marathi.

The leaflets promoted the Bible and Christianity. They also tried to preach to the driver claiming that Christianity was better than other religions.
The cab driver promptly informed police officers on duty nearby during a rally. The three foreigners were taken to the police station where their passports visas and documents were checked in detail. The matter was then handed over to the Foreigners Registration Office of Pune City Police.
The police confirmed that the group had violated the conditions of their tourist visas by engaging in religious propagation and preaching. Such activities are not permitted on a tourist visa under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Bhajibhakare confirmed the action.

All three have now been directed to leave India by 10 May 2026.
Tourist visas are for tourism only. Missionary work is not allowed.

Want to bring to your attention to a sorry story from last week. A patient known to me was admitted around 2 a.m in an unconscious state and with breathing difficulty at RGGGH, Chennai in the IMCU. I visited the patient around 10 pm that night (almost 20 hours later).

First the ward itself. It was so dirty that I couldn't believe it was an ICU.I had removed my slippers when I went in and they were caked in dirt when I left.

There were sometimes 2 attenders sitting on the patient's bed. The smell in the ward was overpowering.

The irony was that the ward was well equipped with multi parameter monitors, ventilators and other equipment. Yet it resembled a general ward.

Why can't visitors be restricted? Why can't the floor be kept clean?
How will any patient susceptible to an infection stand a chance?

I would like to say that things were better than they were 30 years ago when we worked there but from a hygiene and cleanliness perspective they clearly weren't.

Do they not know that keeping a ward so dirty will harm lives?

Why is nothing being done?

So many shiny buildings are built. Many fancy equipment are procured but something as basic as cleanliness and infection control that form the heart of good healthcare is neglected.

Will do a separate post on the quality of care I saw there later.
