EFCC Arrests Fleeing Ex-Power Minister, Saleh Mamman in Kaduna

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a fleeing former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, in Rigasa area of Kaduna State.
Mamman was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, May 19, 2026 following weeks of intensive surveillance and intelligence gathering by operatives of the Commission.

Addressing journalists on the arrest, Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed that the former minister went underground after he was convicted by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on corruption charges.

“On May 7, 2026, Justice James Omotosho found Mamman guilty on all 12 counts bordering on diversion of funds meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects. The court convicted him in absentia after agreeing with the Commission that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt,” he said.

“For us, getting the convict to serve his jail terms is extremely important in view of the seriousness with which we are tackling corrupt practices. It is this resolve that made us deploy intelligence to tracking and arresting the convict. We will process his transmission to the Correctional Centre accordingly”, he said.

Justice Omotosho had, in his judgment, held that the EFCC successfully established that Mamman and his associates diverted not less than N22 billion meant for the execution of critical power projects. The court further held that the defence failed to present credible evidence capable of discrediting the prosecution’s case.

The judge condemned the diversion of public funds earmarked for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric projects, describing the act as a gross abuse of public trust. He also noted that the convict deployed proxy companies and associates to siphon and benefit from funds meant for critical national infrastructure.

Mamman, who served as Minister of Power between 2019 and 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, supervised Nigeria’s power sector and major hydroelectric projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru power projects.
Following his conviction, the court ordered that he be arrested and produced before it on May 13, 2026, for sentencing. However, the convict failed to appear in court on the scheduled date, prompting the court to proceed with sentencing in his absence.

Justice Omotosho subsequently sentenced Mamman to seven years imprisonment each on Counts 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 without an option of fine. He was also sentenced to three years imprisonment on Count 4 with an option of N10 million fine and two years imprisonment on Count 5 without an option of fine.
The court further ordered that the sentences run consecutively, bringing the total jail term to 75 years.
Apart from the conviction, Mamman is also facing another corruption trial before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, over alleged N31 billion fraud.

Alleged $6bn Mambila Power Fraud: Court Adjourns Till April 20

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of a Federal High Court, sitting in Apo, Abuja has adjourned proceedings in the trial of former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye till April 20, 2026

The former minister is facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on an amended seven-count charge bordering on official corruption and fraudulent award of Mambilla Power Project contract to the tune of $6billion (Six Billion United States Dollars) to Sunrise Power Transmission Company Limited.

At Monday`s proceedings, Third Prosecution Witness, PW3, Umar Hussein Babangida during re-examination by prosecuting counsel, Abba Mohammed, SAN, clarified that the investigation team invited three former Attorney Generals of the Federation, Micheal Aondokaa, SAN, Abubakar Malami, SAN and Kanu Agabi, SAN and they volunteered their statements. Both Aondokaa and Malami offered written statements but Agabi volunteered an oral statement.

He added that Agabi told the investigating team that he cannot recall the details and outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting at that time but advised we rely on documents obtained from the office of the Secretary of the Federation.

However, counsel to the defendant, Samuel Falade objected to the testimony of Babangida, describing it as incompetent. His submission was that the witness was making statements of another person who had not been called to give evidence and that Babangida never mentioned or presented the evidence of the AGFs during his testimony in chief, regarding it as a fresh matter for debate.

Responding, the EFCC’s counsel referred to Section 215 sub section 3 of the Evidence Act, which made it clear that re- examination is not limited to clarity only. “The position of the law in re-examination shall be directed to the explanation of matters referred in cross examination as confirmed by the Supreme Court in the cases of Aigbadion vs State 2000 for SCNJ page 1”, he said.

“ My lord in that case, the Supreme Court held that the re-examination of a witness goes beyond explaining matters referred in. The court of Appeal reinstated this position in Mohammed vs Gbugbu and others reported in 2018 LPEFR 44494 Court of Appeal. They also held that among other things, re-examination is an avenue for a witness to state the whole truth of any matter which was not dealt with in examination’

“ Now that the witness has the right to explain and clarify matters on 17 February 2026, which was the foundation date of this question seeking explanation, where he was asked about the opinion given by Malami and Aondokaa which he gave answers for the first time while they were serving as AGFs, this was not part of his evidence- in -chief. Secondly on 24 of November 2025, the same defence asked the PW3 series of questions on Kanu Agabi”. It is necessary for the witness to explain that part before your lordship”, he said.

He concluded by stating that re-examination is for re-explanation of matters referred to in cross examination, suggesting that the questions stemmed out of cross examination from the defence.

Ruling on the matter, Justice Onwuegbuzie upheld the position of the prosecution, allowing the witness to continue with his testimony.

Continuing, Babangida said “Mr Aondokaa, SAN stated that if he had seen the conclusion of the FEC meeting he would have not given any legal opinion. While Malami, SAN said he relied on the legal opinion of Mr Aondokaaa”

Mohammed further asked, “ on March, 11 2026, March 16, 2026, during your cross examination by the defence, you were asked to confirm Exhibit EFCC 3K and EFCC 3D are extracts of the FEC meeting of 21 May 2003, explain what is an extract”.

Alleged N8.7bn Fraud: EFCC Witnesses Reveal Bank Transactions Linking Malami’s Wife, Son

The trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, alongside his wife, Asabe Rakiya Bashir, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, continued on Monday, March 16, 2026, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is prosecuting the defendants on an amended 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy, procuring, disguising, concealing and laundering proceeds of unlawful activities to the tune of N8,713,923,759.49 (Eight Billion, Seven Hundred and Thirteen Million, Nine Hundred and Twenty-Three Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Nine Naira, Forty-Nine Kobo), contrary to the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Monday, prosecution counsel, J.S. Okutepa, SAN, presented Daniel Simon Kwayil, a compliance officer with Union Bank as Prosecution Witness Two (PW2).

After taking his oath, Kwayil told the court that the bank received a letter from the EFCC in 2025 requesting documents relating to Meethaq Hotels Limited, including a forwarding letter, certificate of compliance, account opening package and statement of account of the company with account number 0179011105.

When asked if he could recognise the documents, the witness confirmed that he could identify them, adding that the letter was dated December 23, 2025, on a Union Bank letterhead.

Okutepa then sought to tender the documents as evidence.

Responding, defence counsel J.B. Daudu, SAN, said he had no objection for the time being but reserved the right to raise one if necessary.

Justice Abdulmalik subsequently admitted the documents in evidence and marked them as Exhibit B series.

Led further in evidence, the witness was asked to refer to page 37 of the statement of account.

According to him, on February 5, 2024, there was a payment of N14 million by instant transfer to Abubakar Malami on the order of Meethaq Hotels Limited.

He further stated that on March 4, 2024, there was another transfer of N24 million in favour of Abubakar Malami from Meethaq Hotels Limited.

The witness added that on February 3, 2024, another N24 million was transferred to A.A. Malami and Co on the order of Meethaq Hotels Limited.

Kwayil also told the court that on May 3, 2024, as reflected on page 38, there was a transfer of N12,500,000 in favour of A.A. Malami.

When asked who the signatory to the account of Meethaq Hotels Limited was, the witness replied:

“The sole signatory to Meethaq Hotels Limited is Asabe Rakiya Bashir.” He identified the second defendant, Asabe Rakiya Bashir, in the dock and told the court that her identification card appeared on pages 11 and 12 of the account opening documents.

He also noted that the board resolution on page 10 made her the sole signatory to the account.

Further testifying, Kwayil said the statement of account of Meethaq Hotels Limited spanned pages 34 to 41, showing both inflows and outflows.

According to him, on November 3, 2022, the account received two deposits of N1,745,242.73 and N21,202,209.36.

He said on November 8, 2022, the account received N685,200.00 and N685,400.

The witness added that on November 18, 2022, the account received N1,047,019.55.

He further told the court that on November 28, 2022, the account received N10 million twice from YMB Energy Limited.

Continuing, he said on December 2, 2022, the account received N4,565,320.58, while on December 5, 2022, it received N4,828,880.56.

Kwayil also stated that on December 20, 2022, there was an inflow of N1,83,686.44 into the account.

According to him, on January 10, 2023, the account received N43,177,453.94, and another N4,650,781.50 on the same day.

Some Nigerian Christians are very loud about fighting insecurity in Nigeria, until confronted with information suggesting US or European involvement, then they will start deviating, denying or keep quiet !!!
