Ethiopia Rejection of Eritrea's Proposed Oil Pipeline

(EP) - Ethiopia's decision to reject Eritrea's oil pipeline proposal from Assab to Addis Ababa has become clearer.

This pipeline was designed to transport refined petroleum products from Eritrea’s port of Assab to Ethiopia’s capital, addressing the nation’s increasing energy needs amid ongoing infrastructure and economic development.

The proposal emerged during a period of improving relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, following the peace agreement in 2018 that ended a prolonged conflict.

Financing for the pipeline was expected to come from the UAE, and such infrastructure projects could have strengthened economic ties between the two countries. It would have provided Eritrea with a crucial source of revenue through much cheaper transit fees, while also offering Ethiopia more reliable fuel access and reducing its reliance from other nations.

However, the potential realisation of this project was undermined by Ethiopia's underlying intention to seize Assab by force.

Now, it all makes sense!
