When Nevermind was released in 1991, Kurt Cobain was far from living the life of a rock star. He had been evicted from his apartment and was reportedly living out of his car as Nirvana’s breakthrough album began changing music history.
In the summer of 1991, shortly after returning from Los Angeles where Nirvana had recorded Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was evicted from his apartment in Olympia. He came home to find his belongings—including clothes, lyrics, and musical equipment—packed into boxes and left on the sidewalk because he could no longer afford the rent.
For the following weeks, Cobain lived out of his 1963 Plymouth Valiant and stayed on friends’ couches, struggling financially just as he was on the verge of releasing a major-label album that would change music forever.
When Nevermind arrived in September 1991 and became a worldwide sensation, Cobain’s circumstances changed dramatically. However, the eviction remains one of the most well-known reminders of the difficult period he endured before finding fame.
