Although I wasn't presenting @BSAS_org, I was like a proud parent supporting @hjferg sharing some research we've been working on! The feasibility study will hopefully lead to an automated proxy measure for positive welfare in cows ๐๐๐
Can I interest anyone in a PhD on animal behaviour and zoo conservation education with @HarperAdamsUni and @TwycrossZoo? I come with excellent references as a supervisor ๐๐ Details here: https://t.co/NjnYaj8aUm. Get in touch with Qs! @DrSamWard@AnneCarterPhD@naomilfrost
More feeding places per cow gives better feeding synchrony - an indicator of #positivewelfare Also benefits of bedding, hay in diet and of course access to pasture. All achieved on only very few farms in this Italian study #EAAP2022@EAAP_Cattle#cowwelfare
@Oxtale@nutrition_annie Sorry was on leave, and twitter is definitely work for me ๐ ๐ I actually haven't come across this yet with any farms I've been on recently.... Emma Redfurn is always watching her cows, into the weird and wonderful and would probably know some like minded farmers??
I walked into this barn on a 300 cow commercial dairy farm yesterday and almost every cow came up to greet me. This tells me more about animal care than any formal metric for measuring welfare.
Very interesting and there's good discussion in the thread! Would be interested to try it ๐๐ป pitty homage to bovine is so far away! Anyone one know if any farms in Scotland producing ex dairy beef?
Googled โbest Sunday roast in londonโ this morning and some of the top ones are offering โex dairy rumpโ etc as their speciality - is this a thing?! Is ex dairy meat now a luxury?!?! Where are they sourcing this ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ Genuinely intrigued by thisโฆ
Second paper from my PhD is now published and free to access on PLOSONE!! All about dairy cow motivation for open space lying options ๐๐๐

New research from SRUC has found more than a third of consumers are willing to pay a price premium for fresh pork products labelled โanimal friendlyโ. They'll also pay more for pork labelled โlocalโ and โlow-fatโ, while an โorganicโ label is less valued: https://t.co/KLzAY1slMn
Secondary Maths teachers - come along to National Museum of Rural Life for a Cow to Cone session next month. Learn more about the resource, running the R code and the farm which generated the data!
@nutrition_annie@riley_bethan I've just gotten your email ๐ I'll keep an ear out - I moved in august and properties were few and far between! Might be easier in may when *some* students might be moving out ๐ค๐ป
@SkylarkHolly I imagine they're asking that because they see all the amazing research and are frustrated that it doesn't trickle down to public knowledge, or maybe that's just me ๐ might be fun to show ad campaigns that demonstrate this trickle down?
I submitted my first review of a paper on Friday (that deadline snuck up on me!) and the authors just recieved them today.... despite being #reviewer2, I was definitely the nice one ๐ #AcademicTwitter
#Viva done and minor corrections came in today, a day or two's work at most ๐ฅณ it's finally over! I was so stressed for this final hurdle but ended up really enjoying it, really great to discuss my work with people so interested in it โค #phdchat#AcademicTwitter#phdlife#cows
