#PWC2024 was my best ever year @patchbirding at Wheldrake Ings with a total of 159 species & 206 points. The only new species was @LoDerwentValley Great Reed Warbler find. Thanks to all the local birders & the @LDV_NNR staff & volunteers
@YorkBirding
Strom Darragh has given our floodplain reconnection on the river Dove its first test! (Slightly sooner than we expected). It's fantastic to see the floodplain reactivated in these peak flow events. We can't wait to see this site develop next year. @EnvAgencyYNE@YorksWildlife
We have 32 new arrivals to the Crayfish Hatchery at @flamingolanduk! Originally from @BrisZooSociety, the team will care for these white-clawed crayfish over the next few months to ensure the hatchery is running smoothly.
Our team has planted hundreds of great water parsnips and tansy plants at Barmby on the Marsh wetland reserve! The plants were grown, quarantined, and carefully checked by the staff and volunteers of Yorkshire Water at @tophilllow before being transferred to Barmby @YorksWildlife
Completed groundworks at one of our floodplain reconnection sites. 17ha of arable going into species rich floodplain meadow, low intensity cattle grazing. Long term future secured. In peak flood events it will slow the flow. Still work to do here, look forward to updating.

Itโs beginning to sound a lot more like late autumn now too with upto 2,200 Greylag Geese back in the #LDV providing a wonderful spectacle & an incredible sound, particularly at dawn and dusk, with increasing numbers of Wigeon, Teal, Pintail & other waterfowl ๐ฆ @YorkBirding
1,300 Golden Plover were feeding on favoured arable fields around the reserve yesterday (good October count), with three recently caught & GPS tagged in order to better understand how they use the NNR & surrounding landscape to help our wider work in the area @YorkBirding
Setting off this year's survey season in style - creating a new crayfish ark site in the Derwent Catchment earlier this month. Great effort from everyone involved. Funding from @NEYorksNLincs Species Recovery Programme.
We've been discussing with landowners about options for creating a new buffer strip to restrict livestock access and allow the beck to restore itself at Lowdales beck, near Scarborough. @YorksWildlife
Fantastic to see a Curlew (having recovered from a broken wing) released & take to the skies in the #LDV this morning - another great job by Jean & Battle Flatts Vets - each & everyone of these birds is so precious. Hopefully this one can go onto breed & add to the population ๐ฆ
Our @ypp_peat team were at Askham Bog this week helping to map areas of deep peat - some is over 4m!
The peat depth rods were also handy for retrieving a balloon *sigh* from a tree. Inevitably they got distracted by sphagnum, who would've thought? ๐

Today is #FascinationOfPlants Day! ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐บ
With up to 40 plants in each sq metre there is plenty to be fascinated by in #floodplainmeadows. Find out more on our website (link in bio) or explore your finds with https://t.co/R1ujDzA1aV

The latest #LDV sightings are now online on our NNR blog - https://t.co/qh2QkngxTo. Many thanks as always to everyone who contributed records and counts throughout the month, with particular thanks to members of @YorkBirding and regular patch birder @Duncbye
@LDV_NNR@TeeJay811 Just watched the swifts return to under our roof tile in Elvington today and this year's brood of starlings from our roof come down for a bath in our pond, great time of year!
