Japanese neuroscientists spent years working out how to put a crying baby to sleep. They wired 21 babies to heart monitors, tested different ways of being held, and landed on a 13-minute routine. The grandma in this video has been doing it for three generations.
Three labs working independently arrived at the same answer from different angles. The first piece came from a pediatrician named Harvey Karp who published it in 2002 after years of studying how parents around the world calm their babies. Babies are born with a built-in calming switch in their brain. The switch flips on whenever something mimics the womb: warmth, snug pressure, gentle movement, a steady whooshing sound. Once it flips, fussing stops and sleep takes over. Karp called it the calming reflex. Every parent has set it off dozens of times without knowing it has a name.
The second piece comes from a sleep lab in Geneva. In 2019, researchers there put adults on a bed that rocked gently, about one sway every four seconds, and watched their brains all night. People fell asleep faster. They also dropped into deeper sleep, the kind where the brain locks in memories from the day. The part of your inner ear that senses motion is wired directly into the parts of your brain that handle sleep. Rocking syncs your brain waves.
The third piece is the most direct. A 2022 study put tiny heart monitors on 28 babies at home and watched how their bodies reacted to different kinds of touch. Only four kinds of touch worked: rocking, patting, bouncing, and stroking. Each one triggered the calming response within seconds. Heart rate dropped. The body shifted into rest mode.
The 13 minutes came from a team at RIKEN, one of Japan's biggest research institutes. They tracked how different ways of holding babies affected their heart rates and figured out the exact recipe. Walk around with the baby in your arms for five minutes. Then sit, still holding them, for another five to eight minutes. Only then put them down. The wait was the surprise finding. Put the baby down too early and they wake up. Give them eight full minutes of held sleep first, and they stay asleep.
All of this lived inside grandmothers' arms for thousands of years before anyone hooked a baby up to a sensor. Passed quietly from mother to daughter to granddaughter. The neuroscience just caught up.

When a rabbit's partner dies, the surviving rabbit can be dead within a day. Just from grief. The stress physically shuts its stomach down. Vets call it GI stasis, and it's a known killer of bonded partners. What you're watching might be the first hours of it.
Rabbit vets actually encourage letting the survivor stay with the body. They tell owners to give the rabbit time with its partner, sniffing, nudging, lying next to her, sometimes for a few hours. Without that goodbye, the survivor can spend weeks searching the home for a partner who never comes back. With it, they're more likely to eat the next day. More likely to live.
In 2008, researchers at the University of Edinburgh built an unusual cage to measure how much rabbits need each other. It had weighted doors at both ends. On one side, food. On the other, a few minutes of contact with another rabbit. The doors got heavier over time, so the rabbit had to really want it. The rabbits worked nearly as hard for the friend as they did for the food.
Watch a bonded pair and you see why. They follow each other around all day. Sleep pressed together at night. Groom each other's face, head, and ears in long, careful sessions. When their partner is close they make a soft clicking sound with their teeth, called tooth purring. It sounds like a cat's purr.
When one of them dies, the survivor's body reacts before its mind catches up. Rabbits are prey animals. Almost everything in the wild wants to eat them. Their bodies evolved one survival rule: when something scary happens, drop everything and run. So a rabbit's stress system is wired to switch hunger off in a crisis. Run first, eat later. That same wiring kicks in when a bonded mate suddenly disappears, except now there's nothing to run from. The rabbit hunches into itself, stops eating, and pulls away from everything around it. Some spend weeks searching the spot where their partner used to be.
Rabbit welfare groups have documented cases of surviving partners who simply stopped eating after their mate died. They sometimes call it dying of heartbreak.
The brown rabbit in the video is doing what a bonded rabbit does when his partner is suddenly gone. He stays close to her body. He keeps watch. He says goodbye the only way a rabbit can.
If he survives the next two weeks, it will be because someone notices he has stopped eating and gets him to a vet who knows rabbits. If he doesn't, his stomach will give out before anything else does. A bonded rabbit's body is built around being with another rabbit. When that other rabbit is gone, the body itself starts to fall apart.
Harvard scientists ran a simple test. They put adults under blue light for 6 hours one night, then under green light at the same brightness the next. Blue light pushed their bedtimes back by 3 hours. Green pushed them back by 1.5. And in kids, the same lights hit about twice as hard.
The reason comes down to a tiny patch of cells at the back of every human eye. These cells have one job. They tell your brain whether it is day or night. They wake up most when light hits a very specific shade of blue, the same shade phone screens and modern bulbs are loaded with. When those cells fire after dark, the brain stops making melatonin, the chemical that pulls you toward sleep.
Red light barely sets off those cells at all. A 2025 study from the University of Zaragoza put people under red lamps and blue lamps for three hours at night. Under blue, their melatonin stayed scraped to the floor. Under red, it climbed back up to more than three times higher. Same brightness. The color did all the work.
Children get this worse than adults. Two reasons. Their pupils are bigger, so more light gets in. And the lens inside a kid's eye is still glass-clear, where adult lenses slowly yellow with age and filter blue out naturally. A 10-year-old's body clock is roughly twice as sensitive to evening light as a 45-year-old's. A bedside lamp that feels harmless to a parent can be wrecking a kid's sleep clock at the same time.
Then there is the lag. Once the brain catches a dose of blue light, the wake-up signal it sends out keeps echoing for 3 to 4 hours after the lights go off. So a kid on an iPad at 9pm can still be wired at midnight even if you took the iPad away at 9:01.
Modern LED bulbs and screens are tuned to roughly 6500 Kelvin. That is sunlight at noon. Old incandescent bulbs sit around 2700, mostly red and yellow with almost nothing in the blue range. To a human eye, a red-lit room is just about as close to no light at all as you can get. The brain reads it as nighttime.
The fix is boring. Use warm bulbs at 2700 Kelvin or lower in any room a kid spends evenings in, switch off phones and tablets two hours before bed, and if a night light is needed for bathroom trips, make it red or amber. The science was pinned down to the exact color of light back in 2001.

Orcas eat great white sharks. They hunt seals, dolphins, and baby whales. They have never killed a single human in the open ocean. Not once, in all of recorded history.
An orca's brain weighs up to 15 pounds. Yours weighs about 3. They have roughly double the brain cells we do in the regions that handle complex thought. A neuroscientist at Emory named Lori Marino put an orca brain in an MRI and found these animals can tell different species apart underwater. They do it by sending out clicks that bounce off everything around them and come back as a kind of 3D sound map (this is called echolocation). From 500 feet away, an orca knows you're a human and not a seal. It skips you on purpose.
The answer is culture. Orcas around the world are divided into at least 10 separate populations, each with its own food rules, its own language, and its own way of hunting. All of it learned from their mothers. One population eats only fish. Another eats only marine mammals like seals and sea lions. These two populations can live in the exact same water and never swap a single meal. A baby orca learns what food is from its mother, and that list stays the same for life.
In the Pacific Northwest, one population called the Southern Residents eats almost nothing but Chinook salmon. Scientists have documented them killing harbor porpoises 78 times over six decades, carrying the dead porpoises in their mouths, and never once eating them. Even when the group was starving. A 2023 study in Marine Mammal Science looked at all 78 cases and concluded it was play. These orcas would rather go hungry than eat something their culture says isn't food.
Researchers studying whale behavior in 2001 found that orca cultural traditions "appear to have no parallel outside humans." Each family group has its own dialect, its own version of the language. Calves spend about two years just learning how to make all the sounds their family uses. Mothers will slow down a hunt on purpose so their young can watch.
In 2005, a 12-year-old kid was swimming in Helm Bay, Alaska when an orca came at him full speed. At the very last second, the orca seemed to realize it was charging a human. It bent its entire body in half and turned back to open water. In captivity, it goes differently. SeaWorld's Tilikum killed three people during his life in a concrete tank. Research from 2016, published in the journal Animals, traced it to psychological collapse from being locked away from the family bonds orcas need to stay stable.
I think calling this a "mystery" undersells the science. Orcas decide what to eat based on culture, not instinct. No orca mother has ever taught her calf to hunt humans, so no orca hunts humans. Only about 75 of those salmon-eating Southern Residents are still alive. Their pregnancy failure rate is 69% because we've destroyed their salmon runs. They won't break their food culture to survive. Whether we care enough to protect theirs is the part that actually matters.
