I'll be happy to help you and (many others) understand the point of a Sign Language interpreter even if a video has subtitles.

It is like saying what is the point of:
- Music if I can read the lyrics
- Watching TV or Movies if I can read the script
- a Phone call if I can just text

(other analogies)
- Eating Ramen if i can just have pasta
- Driving a Tesla if I can just drive any car
- Starlink, if I have dial up internet

The difference is the experience.

Subtitles are great tool, but it's hard to compete with spoken words that convey, context, feelings, jokes and sarcasm through "Tone of voice".

Sign Language interpretation provides "Tone of Voice" visually and in a 3D communication style that encapsulates what the speaker is trying to convey.

I hope this helps bring a little more understanding about the difference between subtitles and a Sign Language Interpreter.

Each time, they cut the bones a little shorter. By the 3rd there’s a noticeable difference in gait and can affect lower back.

@meganmajocha As interpreter, this happens often (unsolicited). I redirect with a friendly smile, “That was __’s presentation; all accolades are theirs. I’ll interpret so you can let them know…” I’m in the kill-with-kindness camp; do you recommend a different approach?

During the course I teach about a smorgasbord of interpreting settings, we take class time to discuss professional appearance for each of those settings. Grads say it’s helpful.
