“[Jar Of Flies’ title] comes from an experiment I did in junior high. You got two jars, each with a food paste in the bottom and two flies, a male and a female. The two flies get together and in a few days there’s a whole bunch of them. One jar is the control; you don’t do anything and they get to this point where they reach their peak population, and they kill themselves out ‘cause they start shitting in their food. But in the other one, you clean it out every day so they just keep multiplying. The theory behind the experiment is that there is nobody to clean our jar so we should stop shitting on ourselves. “[Whale & Wasp is] another song that I had lying around for a while. In fact, it's one of my earliest pieces of music—I was probably around 18 or 19 when I wrote it. So when we started writing for Jar Of Flies, I had to remember how the song went. Mike [Inez] talked about putting some strings on the record, and we thought 'Whale And Wasp' would be a good song for that. As for why I called it 'Whale And Wasp,' I did so because that's basically what it sounded like to me - a conversation between whales and wasps.” — @JerryCantrell
