Similar experience: take a look at my first project: https://t.co/ghInAtS4cp
Now granted, the title alone should tell you this was never meant to be a serious project. It was always meant to be an experiment on how game dev works from concept to release. I learned a lot from it, and from the streamers who enjoyed it and the streamers who hated it, and the bug reports. Did some patches and things. But again, everything was noted.
Look up the 3-Game Framework. First game you release should be free, usually on Itch (I chose Steam because I needed that experience too, and was prepared to eat the $100 app fee). Keep it small. It will never be perfect. But it will always be a learning experience.
2nd game will be taking lessons you learned from that first experience. Try to sell it for like $5, but again, keep it small if possible. This is the point where you're incredibly humbled by the negative impact.
Where I have my own concerns is what my third game should be -- I have a space colony sim and another project that I really think would be good, because they both have rich stories, replayability, and lessons from Survival Horror #8,436 and The Wake Event (which is still in development). I know The Wake Event won't make it big, and I'm by no means putting in the marketing effort for this one. The Wake Event knows its place. We can't all be ConcernedApe-levels of lucky.
Bottom line: Don't give up. There's a demographic out there waiting for your product. Just gotta figure out what it is.
@fantasticodev That's one of the reasons why I'm putting a demo out now instead of waiting for Next Fest in October, because I'm barely getting any wishlists as it is, but I think once people dive in, it'll get there. Plus, as alluded, it's great for demo streamers.
Happy #ScreenshotSaturday everyone! Setting up the Escape Pod sequence this time. Feel free to Wishlist "The Wake Event" and be notified when the demo is launched in the next week or two, as well as the actual game launch! #IndieDev#IndieGame

@WeVennStudios I'd say the terminal network. It starts as simple routing, but before long you're making choices that change how the station responds to you.
